Described are techniques for processing a request from a client for performing an operation that is received by a business logic provider. First processing is performed by the business logic provider to process the request that includes communicating with other providers for information in connection with the request, performing validation processing using the information obtained from the other providers to determine whether one or more restrictions are violated, each of said one or more restrictions identifying a required state of one or more objects for performing an operation of the request, determining whether any restrictions are violated, and performing one or more actions responsive to determining that any restrictions are violated.

Techniques for performing data validation

Exemplary methods, apparatuses, and systems include receiving a command from a recovery manager running on a management server within a first or second datacenter. In response to the command, device identifiers for one or more logical storage devices within the first datacenter are requested. In response to the request, a first device identifier for a first logical storage device within the first datacenter and a peer device identifier for a second logical storage device within the second datacenter are received. Data is replicated from the first logical storage device to the second logical storage device. The first and second logical storage devices are in an active-passive configuration, the first logical storage device storing the replicated data being active and the second logical storage device storing the replicated data being passive. The command with the peer device identifier is sent to the underlying storage.

Emulating a stretched storage device using a shared replicated storage device

Exemplary methods, apparatuses, and systems include receiving a device discovery command from a recovery manager running on a management server within a first or second datacenter. In response to the device discovery command, device identifiers for one or more logical storage devices within the first datacenter are requested. In response to the request, a device discovery response including a first identifier is received. The received device discovery response is modified to include the first device identifier as the identifier for both an underlying logical storage device and as an identifier for a peer logical storage device. The modified response is returned to the recovery manager in response to the device discovery command.

Emulating a stretched storage device using a shared storage device

Described are techniques for processing a request from a client. Validation processing is performed to determine whether any restrictions are violated. With respect to two associated objects for a logical device and its snapshot, a business logical provider may perform runtime checks regarding the two associated objects of the same or different frameworks to ensure a valid state exists with respect to the requested operation on the two associated objects. For example, the request may be to restore a logical device to its previous snapshot and the restrictions may indicate to not perform the restore if the logical device is in an active mirroring relationship, a source of an active migration, or if the snapshot has expired. The request may be to destroy the logical device which is included in a consistency group and a restriction indicates that a logical device included in a consistency group may not be destroyed.

Described are techniques for processing a request received at a business logic provider from a client. The request includes a snapshot identifier uniquely identifying a snapshot having a snapshot object in a first data model and requests properties of a storage device providing a data source for the snapshot identified by the snapshot identifier. The snapshot object is requested from, and returned by, a snapshot provider. The business logic provider requests, from a storage device provider using a first property of the snapshot object, a storage device object corresponding to the storage device identified by the first property. The storage device provider returns the storage device object to the business logic provider. The storage device object is then returned to the client.

Techniques using associated object properties

A method is used in handling managed object data. A software object is created which represents a managed object in a data storage system. The software object holds performance data for the managed object. The software object is created in response to a request for the performance data. Based on a determination that the performance data held by the software object is out of date, the software object is destroyed.

Handling managed object data

Described are techniques for configuring storage access control. A set of inputs including a first identifier of an initiator port and a device set devices in a data storage system is received. Responsive to receiving the set of inputs, an allowable path set is automatically defined for the initiator in accordance with an initiator-level of granularity. Each device in the device set is accessible by the initiator over each path in the allowable path set. The allowable path set includes paths between the initiator port and each target port of the data storage system. A set of target ports is either specified using a wildcard indicator denoting all target ports of the data storage system, or the set of target ports is otherwise determined implicitly as all target ports of the data storage system.

Configuring storage access control

A method performed by a storage management computer includes (a) receiving a set of storage profile definitions (SPDs) from an administrator of a data storage system over a user interface, each SPD of the set of SPDs including (1) a storage profile name and (2) a set of storage policies assigned to that SPD, (b) providing the storage profile names from the set of SPDs to an environment management application, the environment management application being configured to manage environments that use storage from the data storage system, (c) in response to providing, receiving a selection of a particular SPD from the environment management application to be used in connection with a particular environment, and (d) provisioning a unit of storage from the data storage system to the particular environment in accordance with the set of storage policies assigned to the particular SPD.

Techniques for abstract profile definition to support information hiding

Described is a technique for providing a host identifier for a host. A first portion associated with a characteristic of said host is received. A second portion including a non-deterministic component is received. The host identifier is formed using the first portion and the second portion. The host identifier is used to uniquely identify the host in a storage area network.

Transparent HBA replacement

An information system has a database having distinct object structures that store information about corresponding operating components of the system. An association structure describes many-to-many relationships among the components. Targeted requests for information about first objects are satisfied by obtaining information from a first object structure as well as information about associated objects from the second object structure. Bulk requests for information about a large number of objects are handled differently, using a lookup structure that associates the first objects with limited information of the associated second objects, such as externally visible names which would be meaningful to a requestor. Thus response can efficiently provide full information about all first objects as well as limited but useful information about all associated second objects, avoiding traversals of the association structure and corresponding interrogations of the second object structure.

Application programming interface for efficient object information gathering and listing

Described are techniques for configuring a target data store. Code written in a scripting language is provided. The scripting language includes environment blocks that retrieve data used in a subsequent block and execution blocks that execute an operation to configure said target data store. The retrieved data includes data from said target data store. The code is processed and includes retrieving data in accordance with environment blocks included in the code, and updating said target data store in accordance with execution blocks included in said code.

Script language for storage management operations

A method is used in managing indications in data storage systems. A threshold value is associated with a storage object. A client subscribes to a server for receiving an indication indicating a change in a property of the storage object. A determination is made as to whether a number of indications processed by the server exceeds the threshold value. A bulk status is associated with the indication based on the determination. The indication is send to the client. The client performs an action based on the bulk status associated with the indication.

Managing indications in data storage systems

Described are techniques for performing indication management. Registration criteria is received including information identifying a first set of data elements of a first data model about which a subscriber is registered to receive notifications. Operations are performed to a second set of data elements stored in a data store in accordance with a second data model. The second set of data elements in accordance with the second data model is mapped to a third set of data elements in accordance with the first data model. Using the first set and the third set, a first portion of the third set is determined which is identified in the first set. First processing is performed in accordance with the registration criteria and the first portion of the third set to determine notifications for a subscriber regarding data elements of the first set.

Techniques for performing indication management

A method is used in controlling multi-step storage management operations. From a specification of a desired configuration of a data storage system, a description of a multi-step transaction for producing the desired configuration is derived. The description includes directions for reacting to results of an intermediate step within the multi-step transaction. Management operations are invoked based on the description.

Controlling multi-step storage management operations

Methods for initializing a storage system over a network are described. A server initialization utility operates on each of several storage processing units. A client initialization utility operates on a client computing device. The client initialization utility and server initialization utility communicate via a network coupled to the client computing device and the storage processing units. The client initialization utility is used to initialize parameters for each storage processing unit via communication with the corresponding server initialization utility. The client initialization utility is further used to discover array and storage processing identification information. The client and server initialization utilities communicate via exchange of UDP broadcast datagrams.
