A wireless device may perform a plurality of scans to search for an available wireless network. The wireless device may determine a first set of information about a first environment in which the wireless device is located at a first time. The wireless device may also determine a second set of information about a second environment in which the wireless device is located at a second time. The wireless device may perform a comparison of the first set of information and the second set of information and adjust a time period between successive scans based on the comparison.

Environment aware adaptive backoff for wireless devices that are searching for available networks

A system manages a quality of service provided to an electronic device during a communication session in a network. A quality of service monitor of the electronic device detects satisfaction of a quality of service adjustment condition for changing the quality of service provided to the electronic device by the network. A quality of service manager of the electronic device requests an adjusted quality of service provided to the electronic device by the network. A communication interface of the electronic device communicates in a communication session at the adjusted quality of service provided to the electronic device by the network.

Responsive quality of service management

The embodiments of the disclosure include methods and apparatus that allow dynamic configuration of discontinuous reception (DRX) mode based on conditions associated with device use. For example, a device may be operating in a first mode of DRX having short and long DRX cycles that provide a level of user experience that is balanced with a level of power conservation. During operation, changing conditions of device use may indicate that the first configuration of the DRX may be changed to a second configuration by removing the short DRX cycle to conserve power without affecting the user's experience. For example, a user may move out of proximity of the device and may not be affected by a slower speed of data downloading. Based on the changed conditions of device use, the DRX may be changed to operate in a second configuration that may download data slower but consumes less power.

Inhibiting short DRX based on device use conditions

Adjustable device settings is described herein. In one or more implementations, a client device is configured with device settings that are compatible with multiple different geographical locations. The client device attaches to a wireless network via a wireless radio of the client device, and receives location information from the attached wireless network. The client device determines a current geographical location of the client device based at least in part on the location information received from the wireless network, and adjusts the device settings of the client device to conform to location-specific settings of the current geographical location.

Adjustable device settings

A computing device may include an accessory radio that facilitates point-to-point wireless connectivity between the computing device and one or more accessory devices. The accessory radio may periodically broadcast its presence to the one or more accessory devices while operating in an active state. The accessory radio may transition from the active state to a sleep state after a period of inactivity. The computing device may also include a general purpose radio that may facilitate general wireless connectivity between the computing device and other devices. The general purpose radio may listen for any messages that are intended for the accessory radio while the accessory radio is in the sleep state. The general purpose radio may activate the accessory radio in response to the general purpose radio receiving a message, while the accessory radio is in the sleep state, that satisfies at least one activation condition.

Power saving in a computing device that includes multiple radios

Examples of the disclosure enable packet data access to be managed. In some examples, a device is coupled to a wireless network using a first access point name (APN). The wireless network includes a first packet data network (PDN) corresponding to the first APN and a second PDN. A request to couple the device to the wireless network using a second APN corresponding to the second PDN is received. When the device is configured to use a single PDN, a first instruction associated with decoupling the device from the wireless network is transmitted to the first PDN, and a second instruction associated with coupling the device to the wireless network using the second APN is transmitted to the second PDN. Aspects of the disclosure enable controlling or restricting packet data access to manage network resources.

Using a single packet data network for data transfers to manage network resources

The embodiments of the disclosure include methods and apparatus that provide back-off procedures for avoiding device/network resource depletion in bad network conditions. A device user may selectively enable an auxiliary back-off procedure that extends the time between network service requests. For example, the auxiliary back-off procedure may be used if the device determines an attach request is unsuccessful when a reject message is received from the network and the reject message indicates a reject cause for which the device has no defined back-off to follow. The auxiliary back-off procedure may be also be used if the device determines that a service request is unsuccessful when the service request is ignored, i.e. no response is received from the network, or, when a service request reject is received from the network and the reject message indicates a reject cause for which the device has no defined back-off to follow.
