Classifier for communication device. A communication device includes a classifier and a number of PHY (physical layer) receivers communicatively coupled thereto that enable the communication device to process various received signal types. Each of the PHY receivers is operable to perform pre-processing of a received frame (or packet) of data and to calculate a confidence level indicating whether the received frame is intended for that particular PHY receiver; this pre-processing does not involve processing (e.g., demodulation and/or decoding) of the received frame. Those PHY receivers having sufficiently high confidence levels assert claims to the classifier for the received frame. The classifier is operable to arbitrate between competing claims by 2 or more PHY receivers and to ensure that the received frame is provided to the PHY receiver for which it is intended.

Classifier for communication device

An analog-to-digital converter (ADC) disposed in a data reception path to convert data from an analog format to a digital format is switched between two or more power modes to conserve power when data is not being received. ADC stays in a lower power-lower precision mode until an inbound data is detected, at which time the ADC switches to a higher power-higher precision mode to convert the data. Once data conversion is completed, the ADC switches back to the lower power-lower precision mode to conserve power.

A digital-to-analog converter (DAC) disposed in a data transmission path to convert data from a digital format to an analog format to be transmitted is powered down during a receive mode of operation for a wireless communication device. Likewise, an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) disposed in a data reception path to convert received data from an analog format to a digital format is powered down during a transmit mode of operation.

A method of determining a start of a transmitted frame at a receiver on a frame-based communications network. A received transmitted frame is filtered using filter coefficients matched to a preamble symbol sequence to provide a correlation sequence. The correlation sequence is low-pass filtered and delayed to provide a delayed low-pass filtered correlation signal. The delayed low-pass filtered correlation signal is compared with the low-pass filtered correlation signal and a fixed predetermined threshold to provide a correlation difference indicator. Energy of the received transmitted frame is detected and the energy is low-pass filtered to provide a low-pass filtered energy signal. The low-pass filtered correlation signal is compared with the low-pass filtered energy signal to provide a correlation peak indicator. A logical-AND of the correlation difference indicator and the correlation peak indicator is formed to determine a match/no match comparison indicative of the start of a transmitted frame.

Method of determining a start of a transmitted frame in a frame-based communications network

A method of determining a collision between two or more transmitting stations at one of the transmitting stations on a frame-based communications network. A transmitted frame header includes a cyclic preamble wherein identical copies of a preamble symbol sequence are transmitted sequentially. A collision is declared if an estimate of error power in second and third copies of the preamble minus an estimate of error power in third and fourth copies of the preamble exceeds a first threshold, or a maximum value of the norm of each term of a source field error vector minus a greater of the estimate of the error power in the second and third copies of the cyclic preamble and the estimate of the error power in the third and fourth copies of the preamble exceeds a second threshold.

Method of determining a collision between a plurality of transmitting stations in a frame-based communications network

A method of determining an end of a transmitted frame at a receiver on a frame-based communications network. An end of frame format for the transmitted frame is provided having an end of frame plurality of symbols. A received transmitted frame is filtered using filter coefficients matched to the end of frame plurality of symbols to provide a correlation sequence low-pass filtered signal. A squared magnitude of the correlation sequence is computed. The squared magnitude of the correlation sequence is low-pass filtered to provide a low-pass filtered correlation signal. The low-pass filtered correlation signal is delayed to provide a delayed low-pass filtered correlation signal. The delayed low-pass filtered correlation signal is multiplied by a fixed predetermined threshold to provide a multiplied correlation signal. The multiplied correlation signal is compared with the low-pass filtered correlation signal to provide a match/no match comparison indicative of the possible end of a transmitted frame.
