An apparatus and method for establishing an IP session between a hostusing a session initiation protocol and a device or mobile stationwithout an IP address is described. The apparatus includes a network interfacefor receiving, via an IP connection, a session request that includes a host contact corresponding to the host and a device identifier corresponding to the device; a controllerfor parsing the session request to determine the device identifier; preparing a message for the device that includes the device identifier and the session request, and presenting the message to the network interface, the message to be delivered to the device via a non-IP connection and to result in the device obtaining a device IP address and sending an acknowledgment of the SIP session request that includes the device IP address.

Establishing an IP session between a host using SIP and a device without an IP address

A method () and apparatus () are arranged and operate for facilitating call routing between sites in an enterprise connected by a private IP network (). A range of identifiers (-) served by IP PBXs (-) in the enterprise may be registered with a SIP registrar () of an inter-site router (). Call requests to a communication unit () outside the home site are routed to the SIP registrar. A site identifier associated with the destination IP PBX allows the call to be completed by the SIP Proxy or the IP PBX where the call was received. When no private IP network is available, a roaming CU registers with a cellular proxy in the visited network. Calls are routed by when an HLR () associated with the CU obtains the roaming number from the cellular proxy () in the visited site. The MSC completes the call to the visited IP PBX using the roaming number and a local SIP registrarforwards the call to the CU.

Inter-site call routing and roaming support

A muting system () according to the present invention enables wireless communication devices () that enter a silent zone to generate a silent zone advisory message () and subsequently mute the wireless communication devices (). A muting device () remotely instructs the wireless communication devices () to enter a silent mode. A digital information system () maintains muting status information that includes information such as the event description, location, and duration in a categorized formation. The digital information center () remotely communicates the muting status information to the wireless communication devices () so that the wireless communication devices () can generate a silent zone advisory message to communicate the status information to callers while the devices are muted.

Silent zone muting system

Location-based grouping according to the present invention enables grouping of wireless network subscribers (S&#x2013;S) based on their location within a coverage area () and offering services based on their respective group affiliations. Specifically, the location-based grouping defines a plurality of zones (Z&#x2013;Z), identified by coordinates, within a network coverage area () and assigns a dynamic network subscriber group number to each zone. The location-based grouping of the present invention requires that a service provider () maintain both a static network subscriber group database containing network-wide subscriber subscription parameters and a dynamic network subscriber group database containing zone-specific network subscriber subscription parameters, and that a network subscriber (S&#x2013;S) register when the network subscriber enters into one of the plurality of zones (Z&#x2013;Z) within the network coverage area (). This registration requirement enables the location of the network subscriber (S&#x2013;S) to be identified as being within the one of the plurality of zones (Z&#x2013;Z) within the network coverage area () and the consequent provision of services to the network subscriber (S, S) based on the static and dynamic network subscriber group subscription parameters associated with the network subscriber (S&#x2013;S).

Location based grouping for wireless network coverage area

In a data communication network a network management station (NMS) (,) constructs a device Management Information Base (MIB) for interfacing with a device (,) to be managed. The device provides an agent (,) that includes a management structure MIB (,) including data describing a device MIB structure supported by the device. The NMS is programmed with an application (,) that can interpret the data of the management structure MIB in order to construct the device MIB. The NMS detects (,) that the device is present on the network, and, in response, accesses (,) the management structure MIB to obtain the data describing the device MIB structure, when the device MIB is not known to the NMS. The NMS application interprets the data describing the device MIB structure, and constructs (,) the device MIB from the interpreted data.

Method and apparatus for constructing a device management information base in a network management station

A communication system (100) for synchronizing implementation of configuration information includes a network manager (105) for transmitting the configuration information and communication devices (110, 115) coupled to the network manager (105) for receiving the configuration information and responding with confirmations indicating that the configuration information is acceptable. In response to receiving the confirmations, the network manager (105) provides to the communication devices (110, 115) an implementation time at which the communication devices (110, 115) begin to utilize the configuration information.
