A latch assembly includes coplanar pairs of magnets that engage each other when the latch assembly is in a closed position in order to secure the latch assembly in the closed position. A related appliance with features for selectively securing a door of the appliance in a closed position is also provided.

A method for monitoring a linear compressor is provided. The method includes determining a velocity dependent induced voltage in a driving coil of the linear compressor, extracting a higher order harmonic from the velocity dependent induced voltage, and establishing that a piston of the linear compressor is crashing if the higher order harmonic is greater than a reference value.

A linear compressor is provided. The linear compressor includes a machined spring. An inner back iron assembly is fixed to the machined spring at a middle portion of the machined spring. A driving coil is operable to move the inner back iron assembly in order to reciprocate a piston within a chamber of a cylinder assembly.

A latch assembly with a first magnet and a second magnet is provided. The first and second magnets engage each other when the latch assembly is in a closed position. The latch assembly also includes features for determining when the latch assembly is in the closed position. Knowledge of when the latch assembly is in the closed position can assist with operation of an associated appliance.

A latch assembly is provided. The latch assembly includes a stator and a mover. Magnets are mounted to the stator and/or the mover. The magnets assist with holding the latch mechanism is in a closed position. A position and orientation of the magnets also assists with shaping the force required to open the latch mechanism.

A linear compressor is provided. The linear compressor includes a casing that defines a chamber and a piston slidably received within the chamber of the casing. A driving coil is configured for selectively urging the piston to slide within the chamber of the casing. An electro-magnetic spring is configured for urging the piston towards a default position when the piston is positioned away from the default position. The electro-magnetic spring can permit the linear compressor to operate at a resonant condition.

A linear compressor is provided. The linear compressor includes an electro-magnetic spring and a casing that defines a chamber. A piston is received within the chamber of the casing. The electro-magnetic spring can apply a non-linear force to the piston such that a total spring force applied to the piston during a compression stroke is substantially linear.
