A data protection system includes a splitter configured to reduce latencies when splitting writes in a computing environment. The splitter captures a write and adds metadata to augment the write with virtual related information. The augmented data is provided to a smartNIC while the write is then processed in the IO stack. The smartNIC may have a volume only visible to the splitter. The smartNIC also includes processing power that allows data protection operations to be performed at the smartNIC rather than with the processing resources of the host.

An apparatus comprises at least one processing device comprising a processor coupled to a memory. The at least one processing device is configured to receive in a storage system, from a host device, mapping information associating a key identifier of a datastore-level key with a corresponding datastore comprising multiple logical storage devices of the storage system, to store the mapping information in a datastore-level key data structure of the storage system, to utilize the key identifier to obtain in the storage system the datastore-level key from a key management server external to the storage system, and responsive to receipt of at least one IO operation from the host device relating to at least one of reading or writing encrypted data of at least one of the logical storage devices of the datastore, to utilize the obtained datastore-level key to access the encrypted data in unencrypted form in the storage system.

Embodiments for transferring data directly from primary storage to secondary storage in a virtualized network including virtual machine (VM) based storage, by exposing a source volume in the primary storage to a hypervisor host of the virtualized network, preparing a destination volume of the secondary storage as an empty volume and exporting it to the hypervisor host so that the host can the destination volume along with the source volume, and moving, in the hypervisor host, data from the exposed source volume to the exported empty destination volume using a combination of Storage Direct, Storage VMotion, and XCOPY or enhanced XCOPY technologies, wherein the XCOPY technology provides a direct transfer of data from the primary storage to the secondary storage.

Transferring data for a virtual machine from a source storage device to a destination storage device includes determining if either the source storage device or the destination storage device is capable of unilaterally transferring data to a storage device having only input and output capabilities. The source storage device pushes data to the destination storage device if the source storage device is capable of unilaterally transferring data to a storage device having only input and output capabilities. The destination storage device pulls data from the source storage device if the destination storage device is capable of unilaterally transferring data to a storage device having only input and output capabilities. A host computing device transfers data from the source storage device to the destination storage device in response to neither storage device being capable of unilaterally transferring data to a storage device having only input and output capabilities.

Data migration in heterogeneous storage environment

An apparatus in one embodiment comprises a storage system having a plurality of storage devices. The storage system is configured for accessibility by a plurality of host devices over at least one network. The storage system is further configured to store a plurality of objects and to store host device state transition information for a plurality of data services each involving one or more of the objects. The storage system comprises first and additional sets of storage elements configured to store the host device state transition information for each of at least a subset of the objects. The first and additional sets of storage elements for a given one of the objects comprise a first set of storage elements for a first data service involving the given object, and one or more additional sets of storage elements for respective ones of one or more additional data services involving the given object.

Shared storage based host device state transition control

A data processing system includes host computers and a data storage system that (1) periodically calculates port congestion values for storage system ports based on per-port values for (a) a number of storage IO commands being processed by each port and (b) CPU utilization of one or more CPUs assigned to each port, and (2) periodically sends the port congestion values to the host computers. Each host computer includes multipathing logic for selectively directing storage IO commands on selected paths to the data storage system. The multipathing logic receives the port congestion values from the data storage system and utilizes the port congestion values for path selection by preferentially directing first storage IO commands of higher service level objective to storage system ports having lower congestion and preferentially directing second storage IO commands of lower service level objective to storage system ports having higher congestion.
