Systems, methods, and apparatus for extended reverse direction grant in a WLAN are provided. In one aspect, a method for communication using a channel that is common to a plurality of nodes is provided. The method includes transmitting first data to the plurality of nodes using a first transmission resource. The first data is transmitted within a transmit opportunity time interval and comprises a first indicator. The method further includes receiving, in response to the first indicator, at least one data transmission from at least one of the nodes, respectively. The at least one data transmitted using at least one second transmission resource, respectively, and is received within the transmit opportunity time interval.

Methods and apparatus for delayed block acknowledgments in a WLAN. In an aspect, a method is provided for communication with one or more nodes. The method includes transmitting to the one or more nodes a block comprising data and a first bit indicating no acknowledgements for the data are to be transmitted from the one or more nodes. The method also includes determining whether a selected time location within a transmit time duration has been reached, wherein if the selected time location has been reached, transmitting to the one or more nodes a second bit indicating that the one or more nodes are to transmit one or more acknowledgements, respectively, for the data. The method also includes receiving at least one acknowledgment for the data within a remaining portion of the transmit time duration.

Methods and apparatus for delayed block acknowledgement in a wireless local area network (WLAN)

A method, apparatus and computer readable medium for an RTS/CTS system that utilizes a plurality of channels for data transfer, includes sending, by a first device, an RTS frame over the plurality of channels; receiving, by a second device, the RTS frame and outputting a CTS frame to the first device based on receipt of the RTS frame, the CTS frame being output over at least one of the plurality of channels; setting, by each device within a network that receives the RTS frame, a network allocation vector (NAV) to a time duration that is based in part on information included in the RTS frame; and transmitting, by the first device, data to the second device within the time duration set by the NAV using the at least one of the plurality of channels.

A method of selectively providing MIMO transmission/reception in a WLAN system includes using a TSPEC reservation and signaling mechanism to instantiate and tear down, dynamically, multi-channel operation in a WLAN; providing an inference algorithm to determine the minimum number of channels required to establish a TSPEC using a MIMO WLAN system; providing specific channel parameters as parameters to be negotiated in the TSPEC; providing frame exchange sequences to be used in Enhanced Distributed Coordinated Access contention based access and to be used in polled access; and providing a mechanism wherein an access point makes a decision as to whether to admit MIMO functionality on a given link, wherein a 'link' is a set of communications between two specific WLAN stations.

Method to negotiate consumed power versus medium occupancy time in MIMO based WLAN systems using admission control

A system and method are provided for controlling bandwidth allocation in a wireless local area network (wLAN). The method comprises: expressing device bandwidth allocations in terms of a time base; in response to expressing the bandwidth allocation in terms of a time base, monitoring network communications; and, measuring the allocated bandwidths. The method may further comprise: establishing polling schedules in response to expressing the bandwidth allocation in terms of a time base; and, de-energizing devices in response to the polling schedules. Expressing device bandwidth allocations in terms of a time base includes establishing: an inter-transmission opportunity (TXOP) interval; and, a TXOP jitter. These fields are supplied in the IEEE 802.11e transmit specification (TSPEC). Then, de-energizing devices in response to the polling schedule includes disengaging transmission and receiving functions in the minimum TXOP intervals between polling events, where the minimum TXOP interval is the inter-TXOP interval minus the TXOP jitter.

Here, when the transmitting station has detected that no frame transmission is performed over the communication network from any other ESTAs in PIFS after the transmission of FINAL FRAME, FINAL FRAME is retransmitted in DIFS after the transmission of FINAL FRAME. After adjusting the automatic gain control at least a second and a third symbol of the data unit are received. The automatic gain control in response to receiving a fourth symbol of the data unit from a second antenna is received. After adjusting the automatic gain control at least a fifth and a sixth symbol of the data unit is received. At least one of the first and second antenna is selected based upon a function of a first and second energy, calculated using the second and third symbol, and the fifth and sixth symbol, respectively.

A system and method are provided for periodic stream admission control in an IEEE 802.11 network. The method comprises: at an access point (AP), receiving a transmit specification, including a requested bandwidth, from a quality of service station (QSTA); computing T, the time equivalent to the requested bandwidth; computing T, the time already allocated; and, computing T, the total time available. IT+T&#x3c;T, then the QSTA is admitted. If T+T&#x3e;T, the QSTA is not admitted. Some aspects of the method further comprise: monitoring the bandwidth of the admitted QSTA. In another aspect, the method: determines the bandwidth required by the admitted QSTA; and, modifies the bandwidth of the admitted QSTA in response to the determined QSTA requirements. In one aspect, the method: monitors channel conditions; and, modifies the bandwidth of the admitted QSTA in response to the channel conditions.

System and method for controlling wireless LAN bandwidth allocation

A system and method are provided for coordinating a power-save interval in an IEEE 802.11 wireless network. The method transmits a first frame from an access point (AP) to a quality of service station (QSTA) and receives an acknowledgement from the QSTA. In response to receiving the acknowledgement, the first frame is retransmitted from the AP to the QSTA and the retransmitted first frame is identified as the last frame in the transmission queue. An acknowledgement is received responsive to the retransmitted first frame and the next minimum service interval is timed in response to the retransmitted first frame.

Upon sensing a premature termination, an access point transmits a rescheduling frame. All sessions are advanced in time, which saves time in the end, without leaving quiet times. A system and method are provided for defining a Burst ACK interface in an IEEE 802.11 network. The method comprising: using Burst ACK primitives to negotiate between peer station management entities (SMEs); establishing an interface between peer MAC entities associated with the SMEs; and, in response to negotiating with the Burst ACK primitives, using a Burst ACK protocol to communicate information between peer Quality of Service (QoS) stations (QSTAs) associated with the SMEs. Using a Burst ACK protocol to communicate information between peer QSTAs includes communicating between the peer MAC entities. In some aspects, establishing an interface between peer MAC entities includes each MAC entity: transceiving Burst ACK primitives with an associated SME; converting between Burst ACK primitives and physical layer communication MAC frames; and, transceiving communication physical layer MAC frames with a peer MAC entity, via the physical layer communication MAC frames.

A method of synchronizing clocks in the stations of ad hoc and infrastructure networks includes providing a time stamp field in a header; reading the header by all stations in a network; extracting the time stamp information from the header by each station in the network as time information; sending extracted time information to a station clock; and adjusting the station clock as a function of the extracted time information. A system for synchronizing clocks in the stations of ad hoc and infrastructure networks includes a DLL having a comparator for receiving the time stamp information and a low-pass filter having a long time-constant for adjusting the station clock in a gradual manner; a time stamp field in a header; and time information extracted from the time stamp information of the header by each station in the network.
