Ceramic honeycombs incorporating cell walls of a sintered alumina material providing controlled pore size distribution in combination with high BET surface area and flexural (MOR) strength are formed by the extrusion, drying and firing of plasticized alumina powder batches containing major proportions of anhydrous, high-surface-area gamma alumina powders dispersed with selected acids; low combined drying and firing shrinkages provide strong, crack-free bodies of high surface area and strength.

High strength/high surface area alumina ceramics

A system and method are disclosed for converting exhaust gas which comprises NO.sub.x, CO, and hydrocarbons, to innocuous products. Exhaust gas is contacted in undiverted flow with a zeolite suitable for adsorption of hydrocarbons, and with a main catalyst suitable for conversion of NO.sub.x, CO, and hydrocarbons to innocuous products. Adsorption occurs when the temperature of the zeolite is suitable therefor. Conversion occurs when the temperature of the main catalyst is suitable therefor. The zeolite and main catalyst are connected directly to one another, that is, in-line, without by-pass valving. The zeolite can be Y zeolite, Beta, ZSM-5, and combinations thereof, and has a SiO.sub.2 to Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, mole ratio of no greater than about 200, and is ion exchanged with a metal which can be rare earth, chromium, and combinations thereof.

Exhaust gas conversion method using thermally stable zeolites

Electrically conductive honeycomb structures are provided for use as catalytic converters, pre-heaters for catalytic converters, or particulate filters. The honeycomb structures are composed of subunits which are arranged to produce a serpentine conductive path through the honeycomb. The serpentine path gives the honeycomb an increased electrical resistance so that elevated temperatures can be achieved with less current. The subunits allow the serpentine current path to be produced without any slitting or cutting of the honeycomb.

Electrically heatable honeycomb structures

Sintered metal bodies and manufacturing method therefor

A porous catalyst support which may be used in a catalytic converter for treating automotive exhaust gases. The support comprises a substrate having a multichannel structure of generally thin walls and washcoat particles of colloidal particle size mainly or wholly within the pores of the walls so as to increase open frontal area and reduce back pressure. Substrate is either ceramic or metal. In a ceramic substrate with microcracks in the walls, the washcoat colloidal dispersion is free of soluble inorganic constituents and the particles do not fill the microcracks so as to prevent undesirable increase in thermal expansion and corresponding decrease in thermal shock resistance.

Molecular sieve-palladium-platinum catalyst on a substrate

Thermally stable Cr-zeolites and Cu-Cr-zeolites, and methods of making same are disclosed. The zeolites have a SiO.sub.2 to Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 mole ratio of about 3 to about 200, and an initial alkali content of less than about about 0.5% by weight based on the alkali oxide. Chromium ions are exchanged into the zeolite to produce Cr-zeolite in which the Cr level is greater than about 0.5% by weight. Copper and chromium ions are provided exchanged on a zeolite to produce Cu-Cr-zeolite. The respective Cr-exchanged zeolites are heat-treated to produce the thermally stable zeolites wherein the BET surface area upon exposure to temperatures of up to about 1000.degree. C. is at least about 50% of the BET surface area of the respective thermally stable zeolites at about room temperature, prior to the exposure to temperatures of up to about 1000.degree. C.

Thermally stable chromium-exchanged zeolites and method of making same

Multi-stage catalytic systems and methods are provided for converting NO.sub.x, CO, and hydrocarbons in a mixture, to innocuous products. The systems include first and second stages, each with substrate and catalyst. The mixture is contacted with the first stage for conversion of the major portion of the NO.sub.x and a portion of the CO and hydrocarbons. The output is contacted with the second stage to for conversion of CO and hydrocarbons. In one system, the first stage catalyst consists essentially of rhodium and a zeolite; the second stage catalyst comprises a noble metal including platinum and/or palladium, and a support. The mixture has a mole ratio of reducing to oxidizing agents of at least 0.8. Low ammonia is generated. In another system, the first stage substrate is made of material capable of being heated to at least 150.degree. C. in no more than about 20 seconds, has heating means for doing same, and is at this temperature at least part of the time of contact with the mixture. The first stage catalyst comprises a support and rhodium with optionally platinum and/or palladium. The second stage catalyst comprises a support, and platinum and/or palladium, and optionally rhodium. Most of the rhodium is in the first stage; most of the platinum and/or palladium is in the second stage. At least 70% by volume of the NO.sub.x, CO, and hydrocarbons is converted. The weight ratio of Pt and/or Pd:Rh in each system is at least about 15:1.

Multi-stage TWC system

A cured sintered porous metal structure comprising aluminum and aluminum alloys is presented comprising an aluminum oxide durable surface integral to the structure. The surface layer is enhanced in aluminum while the underlying structure is thereby depleted in aluminum. The structure exhibits surface and interfacial durability.

Cured surfaces and a process of curing

Sintering metal powder in inert and/or reducing atmosphere has been found to result in a hard porous metal structure without the use of sintering aids. The oxidation resistance of the structure can be enhanced by the firing process comprised of the following steps: oxidation, reduction, and then inert gas sintering.

The present invention is directed to porous sintered aluminide structures of aluminum, nickel, titanium, and/or rare earth metal. A process is disclosed for forming and sintering aluminides. Other components are optionally added to the aluminide compositions to vary the physical properties of the resultant structure.
