This disclosure relates to performing implicit radio resource control state transitions in a cellular communication system. A wireless device may establish a radio resource control (RRC) connection with a cellular base station. A data inactivity timer length and a target RRC state for implicit RRC transitions may be determined. A data inactivity timer having the determined data inactivity timer length may be initiated. It may be determined that the data inactivity timer has expired. The wireless device may transition to the target RRC state based at least in part on determining that the data inactivity timer has expired.

Implicit radio resource control state transitions

Methods related to an inactive state of a user equipment (UE). In one example, when an amount of data in an uplink buffer is less than a threshold, the data is sent to the network while remaining in the inactive state. In another example, when reselecting to a different cell, the UE attempts to reselect to the different cell and remain in the inactive state. When transitioning to a connected state at the reselected cell, the UE sends a resume request including an identification of the first cell. In another example, when a high priority or a background PLMN search is performed in the inactive state, the results are cached and implemented the earlier of when a timer expires or the UE enters an idle state. In another example, a cell reselection criteria is altered in the inactive state to make it less likely that a cell reselection will occur.

Inactive mode operations

This disclosure relates to techniques for performing ranging wireless communication including prioritization. A first wireless device may transmit a request for ranging services to a second wireless device. The first wireless device may transmit an indication of a ranging priority to the second wireless device. The second wireless device may determine a granted ranging priority. The first and second wireless device may perform ranging communication according to the granted ranging priority.

Method and apparatus for adaptive data collection operations where a first user equipment (UE) is paired to a second UE. The first UE may receive capability data from the second UE, the capability data comprising cellular capabilities of the second UE. The first UE may further collect service history data for the second UE, where the service history data corresponds to the cellular capabilities indicated by the capability data. The first UE may further transmit the service history data to the second UE.

Device, system, and method for adaptive data collection operations

This disclosure relates to providing coexistence features for cellular communication in unlicensed spectrum. A wireless device may communicate with a cellular base station in accordance with an original communication configuration. The wireless device may determine that a communication activity is occurring at the wireless device that has a duration longer than a duration threshold. The wireless device may provide an indication to the cellular base station to modify the communication configuration with respect to operation in an unlicensed frequency band based at least in part on determining that a communication activity is occurring at the wireless device that has a duration longer than the duration threshold. The wireless device may communicate with the cellular base station in accordance with a modified communication configuration.

Coexistence features for cellular communication in unlicensed spectrum

A device, system, and method detect an activity and utilize a mitigation scheme. The method is performed at a device that is configured to establish a network connection to a network, the network including a plurality of areas, each area being defined based on a grouping of a plurality of neighboring cells, the device being associated with one of the areas at a select time. The method includes determining between an activity status and a non-activity status associated with the device. When the activity status is determined, the method includes determining an area update rate indicating a number of changes to the associated area over a period of time. When the area update rate exceeds a predetermined update rate threshold, the method includes selecting a mitigation scheme configured to reduce an amount of power used by the device.

Various mechanisms for paging link-budget-limited (LBL) devices are disclosed, including: (1) transmitting paging message with non-conventional paging identifier; (2) transmitting paging message(s) with increased power; (3) repeating transmission of paging message to support combining at receiver. Various mechanisms for UE device to signal LBL status are disclosed, including, transmitting status flag or special value of DRX cycle to network node as part of tracking area update and/or attach request. The network node informs a base station of the device's LBL status as part of a paging message. (The network node may, e.g., assign an S-RNTI to the LBL device from a reserved subset of S-RNTI space.) The base station invokes a paging enhancement mechanism when paging an LBL device. Alternatively, the base station may page UE devices without knowledge of LBL status, e.g., by counting paging attempts for a given UE, and boosting power after the Npaging attempt.

Paging mechanisms for link-budget-limited user devices

A device, system, and method estimate a link budget on a companion device. The method is performed at a first device connecting to a second device over a first connection and a network over a second connection, the second device connecting to the network over a third connection. The method includes receiving initiating data from the second device based on radio conditions associated with the third connection. The method includes, when the first device disconnects from the second device and establishes the second connection, determining an initial network metric value based on the initiating data that is used to estimate radio conditions associated with the second connection. The method includes selecting a data exchange mode of the first device based on the initial network metric value which is used until a further network metric is determined by the first device.

A device sets an activity mode for a cellular connection. A method to set the activity mode is performed at a device located with a user that is configured to establish a network connection to a network. The method includes determining a status of the user, the status indicating an activity state or a non-activity state of the user. The method includes, when the status indicates the activity state, activating an activity mode on the device that restricts select types of mobile originating data traffic.

Activity mode for a cellular connection

Method and apparatus of a user equipment (UE) device communicating during discontinuous reception (DRX). The UE may determine a data traffic pattern of an application executing on the UE. The UE may compare the data traffic pattern against a plurality of DRX configuration settings of a base station (BS). The UE may determine that the DRX configuration settings do not match the data traffic pattern. The UE may select a first DRX configuration setting based on the data traffic pattern. The UE may perform communication according to the first DRX configuration settings. The UE may transmit a scheduling request (SR) outside of a DRX on-duration according to the data traffic pattern. Transmitting the SR may be based on the DRX configuration settings not matching the data traffic pattern of the application. In response to transmitting the SR, the UE may receive downlink data of the application from the BS.
