Embodiments for predictive scheduling of backups in a data protection system by initiating a first backup job in a series of scheduled consecutive backup jobs, wherein a second backup job is allowed to begin only after the first backup job is finished and not active, detecting whether or not the first backup job is still active when a second job is to start, and if so, estimating an amount of additional time required to finish the first backup job. The second backup job is then rescheduled to start at least at the end of the additional time. The estimated amount of additional time is determined using a throughput to target storage device parameter. This parameter is periodically checked to determine if there is a change to the estimated amount of additional time, and if so, the estimated time is recalculated based on the changed parameter.

Predictive scheduled backup system and method

Embodiments for transferring data directly from primary storage to secondary storage in a virtualized network including virtual machine (VM) based storage, by exposing a source volume in the primary storage to a hypervisor host of the virtualized network, preparing a destination volume of the secondary storage as an empty volume and exporting it to the hypervisor host so that the host can the destination volume along with the source volume, and moving, in the hypervisor host, data from the exposed source volume to the exported empty destination volume using a combination of Storage Direct, Storage VMotion, and XCOPY or enhanced XCOPY technologies, wherein the XCOPY technology provides a direct transfer of data from the primary storage to the secondary storage.

Storage assisted virtual machine backups using storage VMOTION and XCOPY

Non-disruptive insertion of a storage appliance provides virtualized storage. A first logical device of a data storage system is exposed to a first host and a second host. A data store of the first logical device is uniquely identified using a signature. After inserting the storage appliance between the first host and the data storage system, the first logical device is presented, through the storage appliance, to the first host as a second logical device. After inserting the storage appliance between the second host and the data storage system, the first logical device is presented, through the storage appliance, to the second host as the second logical device. The first and second hosts identify the second logical device and the first logical device as the same logical device using the signature. The data store may be a virtual machine file system data store used by virtual machines on the hosts.

Non-disruptive insertion of virtualized storage appliance

Techniques are presented for event-based host registration. Continuously performed standard path testing operations are able to cause an event signal upon detection of a newly-available path, and upon receiving such an event signal, a host is able to perform host registration along the newly-available path, obviating the need to periodically send out registration commands while simultaneously minimizing latency.

Event-based in-band host registration

A method of registering a host bus port (HBP) of a host computer (host) at a storage bus port (SBP) of a data storage array over a storage network includes (a) acquiring a configuration instruction directing the host to process registration messages from an event processing engine, (b) receiving a registration message from the event processing engine indicating that the HBP needs to be registered with the SBP, the registration message having been generated by the event processing engine in response to receiving an event notification message indicating that a data path across the storage network between the HBP and the SBP is available, and (c) in response to receiving the registration message, processing the registration message by registering the HBP with the SBP by sending a registration command from the HBP to the SBP across the storage network, the registration command including registration information associated with the HBP.
