A permanent magnet electric motor includes a shaft extending along a longitudinal axis, wherein the shaft defines a shaft jacket extending along a first direction, a rotor mounted on the shaft, a stator disposed about the rotor. The rotor defines a plurality of longitudinal channels each with the shaft jacket. The longitudinal channels are part of a rotor jacket. The rotor jacket includes a plurality of inlets fluidly interconnecting the shaft jacket and the plurality of the longitudinal channels. The rotor jacket includes an inner edge and an outer edge opposite the inner edge. The rotor jacket includes a plurality of outlets each in fluid communication with the plurality of longitudinal channels. Each of the outlets is closer to the inner edge than to the outer edge of the rotor jacket.

Rotor cooling system with increased coolant residence time for electric motor

A permanent magnet electric motor includes a shaft extending along a longitudinal axis and a rotor mounted on the shaft. The rotor is rotatable concomitantly with the shaft about the longitudinal axis, the rotor defines an innermost rotor edge. The innermost rotor edge is sized to receive the shaft. The permanent magnet electric motor further includes a stator. The shaft defines a jacket configured to receive a coolant. The jacket is disposed about the longitudinal axis. The jacket is elongated in a first direction. The first direction is parallel to the longitudinal axis. The rotor defines a plurality of longitudinal channels. Each of the plurality of longitudinal channel is elongated along the first direction, and each of the plurality of longitudinal channels is in fluid communication with the jacket to allow fluid flow between the jacket and the plurality of the longitudinal channels.

Cooling jacket with coolant mass balancing for electric motors

A motor stator includes a plurality of stacked annular stator laminates defining a stator core having a plurality of stator teeth on an inner diameter thereof, at least some of the plurality of stator laminates including a plurality of coolant openings therethrough. The plurality of coolant openings of adjacent stator laminates communicate with one another in order to define cooling channels inside the stator core. At least some of the plurality of stator laminates include the plurality of coolant openings including a plurality of generally circumferentially extending slots.

Motor stator back-iron cooling through internal channels

An apparatus for cooling an electric machine includes a plurality of fluid channels disposed in a first surface that surrounds at least part of the electric machine. Each of the plurality of fluid channels defines a circumferential path in the first surface, including a first channel section extending at least substantially parallel to first and second circumferences defined by ends of the electric machine, and including a second channel section configured to direct a cooling fluid between a central region of the first surface and an end region of the first surface. The apparatus also includes an outer shell configured to surround the first surface and define a fluid tight chamber between the first surface and the outer shell, the outer shell having at least one inlet through which the cooling fluid is introduced into the chamber and at least one outlet from which the cooling fluid exits the volume.
