On demand positioning

Techniques described herein provide means by which cell information indicative of a location of a UE may be conveyed to a location server over a 5G NR data connection using a SUPL message with an LTE cell ID data field. In some embodiments, for example, the UE may include the Cell ID of a LTE neighbor cell or information regarding a 5G NR serving cell, such as a portion of the 5G NR Cell ID or a reserved value or sequence identifying the 5G NR serving cell. The techniques may be applicable to the Secure User Plane Location (SUPL) solution defined by OMA and may enable a UE and a SUPL Location Platform (SLP) to support location of the UE using a version of SUPL without explicit support of 5G NR wireless access.

A user equipment (UE) and a Secure User Plane Location (SUPL) Location Platform (SLP) support a SUPL positioning session for at least one uplink or uplink-downlink position method, such as uplink Angle of Arrival or multi-Round Trip Time. To support SUPL positioning for uplink or uplink-downlink position methods, the UE provides an identifier for a serving Access and Mobility Management Function (AMF) and an identifier for the UE to the SLP in a SUPL message. The SLP may exchange positioning messages with a serving base station for the UE using the identifier for the serving AMF and the identifier for the UE. The exchange of positioning messages may enable the SLP to request the serving base station to instigate transmission of uplink positioning reference signals by the UE which may be a key enabler for an uplink or uplink-downlink position method.

Support of control plane positioning methods with a user plane location solution

Techniques described herein are directed toward an enhanced LTE positioning protocol for multiple location reporting (with non-final and final fixes) that can be utilized by a user equipment (UE) to help prevent a disruption of the communication of information for a final location fix from the UE to a location server. In particular, techniques help ensure that the location server will not acknowledge receipt of the information provided by the UE in communication for a non-final fix.

Provided is an enhanced LPP transport that may improve performance where a sender or receiver of messages processes certain messages that include requests to abort transactions or sessions, or processes certain messages that might otherwise result in the sending of abort messages. Embodiments may reduce unwanted system actions such as, for example, the unwanted termination of a transaction or session, or the unnecessary use of system resources.

A dual SIM mobile terminal, such as a Dual SIM Dual Active (DSDA) mobile terminal, connects to a network and performs a user plane or control plane positioning session through the network. When the positioning session is originated by the mobile terminal, either SIM card may be used to connect to its associated network. When the positioning session is originated by another entity in the network, either SIM card may be used for the positioning session. When the mobile terminal connects to a network for an emergency call using either SIM card and an emergency positioning session is performed through the network, the emergency positioning session is permitted only during the emergency call and an emergency callback period and permitted only on a subscription on which the emergency call originated, and no non-emergency positioning sessions with either SIM card is permitted during the emergency positioning session or emergency call.
