Methods and systems are provided for using frequency spreading during communications, in particular communications in which multiple carriers (or subcarriers) are used. The frequency spreading may comprise generating a plurality of spreading data vectors based on transmit data, such as by application of a spreading matrix to portions of the transmit data. Each spreading data vector may comprise a plurality of elements, for assignment to the multiple subcarriers. The receive-side device may then apply frequency de-spreading, to obtain the original transmit data. The frequency de-spreading may comprise use of the same spreading matrix on data extracted from received signals, which (the data) may correspond to the plurality of spreading data vectors.

Frequency spreading for high-performance communications

A cable modem comprises transmitter circuitry, receiver circuitry, and memory. Upon power up of the cable modem in the field, the transmitter circuitry transmits one or more first signals into a network. The receiver circuitry measure echoes of the transmitted one or more first signals. The receiver circuitry generates an installation figure of merit based on the measured echoes and factory-calibration echo measurements stored in the memory. The communication device begins DOCSIS&#xae; network registration if the installation quality measurement meets a determined requirement and generates a notification to troubleshoot the installation of the communication device if the installation quality measurement does not meet a determined requirement.

Full-duplex cable modem calibration

An ideal tap may have a plurality of ports that include at least an input port configured for receiving downstream (DS) signals from and transmitting upstream (US) signals to nodes upstream from the tap within the coaxial network, and one or more other ports that comprise at least one of an output port configured for transmitting downstream (DS) signals to and receiving upstream (US) signals from nodes downstream from the tap within the coaxial network, and a drop port for receiving signal from and transmitting signals to customer premise equipment (CPE) in the coaxial network. The ideal tap may further include processing circuits for handling signals received and transmitted via the tap, with the one or more processing circuits being configured to meet particular predefined tap performance criteria, and to specifically apply, during handling of signals in the tap, frequency shifting based on one or more frequency spectrum shift conditions.

Methods and systems for utilizing ideal taps in coaxial networks

An electronic communication device comprises echo cancellation circuitry and signal modification circuitry. The echo cancellation circuitry may be operable to generate a first signal that approximates interference present in a second signal. The signal modification circuitry may be operable to generate a first cancellation signal in a frequency band that is not used on a communication medium over which the electronic communication device is configured to communicate. The signal modification circuitry may be operable to combine the first cancellation signal with the first signal, wherein the combining of the signals results in a modified first signal that has a lower crest factor and/or peak-to-average power ratio than the first signal. The signal modification circuitry may be operable to combine the modified first signal with the second signal to reduce interference present in the second signal.

Echo cancellation leveraging out-of-band frequencies

Systems and methods are provided for utilizing ideal taps in coaxial networks. An ideal tap may have a plurality of ports that include at least an input port configured for receiving downstream (DS) signals from and transmitting upstream (US) signals to nodes upstream from the tap within the coaxial network; an output port configured for transmitting downstream (DS) signals to and receiving upstream (US) signals from nodes downstream from the tap within the coaxial network; and one or more drop ports for receiving signal from and transmitting signals to customer premise equipment (CPE) in the coaxial network. The ideal tap may further include processing circuits for handling signals received and transmitted via the tap, with the one or more processing circuits being configured to meet particular predefined tap performance criteria, where the particular predefined tap performance criteria comprise one or more of high return loss, high port-to-port isolation, and high port-to-port gain.

Systems and methods are provided for distortion redirection in phased arrays. In an electronic device configured for transmission and reception of signals and having a two-dimensional phased array, effects of distortion, corresponding to at least one processing function applied during communication of signals, on the communication of signals may be assessed, and based on the effects of distortion, one or more adjustments for mitigating the effects of distortion may be configured and applied during processing of signals. Assessing the effects of distortion may include determining one or more characteristics associated with the communication of the signals, where the one or more characteristics relate and/or are subject to the effects of the distortion, and assessing the effects of distortion based on the one or more characteristics.

Systems and methods are provided for full duplex DOCSIS cable modem echo cancellation with training. During reception of downstream signals, echo effects on downstream signals may be determined, with at least some of the echo effects corresponding to concurrently transmitted upstream signals. Echo cancellation corrections may be determined based on the determined echo effects, and the echo cancellation corrections may be applied during processing of the downstream signals. The echo cancellation corrections may include one or both of ACI (adjacent channel interference) cancellation corrections and ALI (adjacent leakage interference) cancellation correction. The echo cancellation may include or be based on preforming echo cancellation training, during active communication and based on one or both of the downstream signals and the upstream signals.

Full duplex DOCSIS cable modem echo cancellation with training

Methods and systems for providing reduced bandwidth acquisition latency may comprise communicating a reservation request for bandwidth allocation for devices operating under a wired network protocol, where the reservation request may be sent by wired network devices via a wireless network protocol over a wireless network. Bandwidth may be allocated in the wired network for the requesting devices by a network controller. Data may be communicated with the requesting devices via the wired network. The wired network communication protocol may comprise a multimedia over cable alliance (MoCA) standard. The wireless protocol may comprise an IEEE 802.11x standard, a Bluetooth standard, and/or any non-public network protocol. The communication of the reservation request via the wireless protocol may decrease a latency of the wired network. A medium access plan (MAP) may be generated by the network controller based on the reservation request and may comprise a bandwidth allocation for the requesting devices.

Channel-sensitive power control

Methods and systems for crest factor reduction may comprise generating an original waveform, generating a distortion signal by reducing a crest factor of the original waveform, generating an error signal by subtracting out the original waveform from the distortion signal, and generating a conditioned waveform by adding the error signal to the original waveform. The crest factor of the original waveform may be reduced based on spectral mask requirements. The crest factor of the original waveform may be reduced using a limiter. The power amplifier may comprise a programmable gain amplifier (PGA). The distortion signal may be generated based on a PGA model and/or a predistortion model. A signal from an output of the PA may be fed back to the PGA model. The PGA model may be dynamically configured. The crest factor of the original waveform may be reduced in an analog domain and/or a digital domain.

Method and system for crest factor reduction

Systems and methods are provided for utilizing low gain low noise signal amplification and ideal taps in coaxial networks. An ideal tap configured for use in coaxial networks may have a plurality of ports, one or more processing circuits configured for handling reception and transmission of signals communicated via the tap, and one or more echo cancellation circuits configured for providing echo cancellation during operations of the tap. The processing circuits are configured based on particular predefined tap performance criteria. The tap performance criteria may relate to one or more of port-to-port isolation, return loss, port-to-port gain, and up-tilt. A cable modem comprises transceiver circuitry and echo cancellation training circuitry. The transceiver circuitry may be operable to transmit and receive signals on a full-duplex Data Over Cable System Interface Specification (DOCSIS&#xae;) network. The echo cancellation training circuitry may be operable to: determine an echo cancellation training group to which the electronic communication device belongs; determine one or more training periods during which the echo cancellation training group is permitted to transmit training signals; and transmit an echo cancellation training signal during the determined training one or more periods and use the transmitted training signal to train echo cancellation circuitry of the cable modem.

Coordinated background training in a full-duplex hybrid fiber-coaxial network

Methods and systems are provided for adaptive management of local networks, such as in-premises networks, which may have access to and/or may be connected to external networks, such cable or satellite networks. A network management device that manages a local network may receive from a client device in the local network, a communication request relating to communication within the local network, may process the communication request, and may configure the communication of the client device based on processing of the communication request. The processing of the communication request may include assessing effects of communication of the client device, at the network management device, on other connections and/or communications, with the other connections and/or communications including external connections and/or communications with one or more devices and/or networks external to the local network. Processing of the communication request may include assessing likelihood of interference at the network management device.

Methods and systems for managing bandwidth allocation for shared network infrastructure in local networks

A network device may comprise one or more circuits including a clock signal generator, an ADC, and a processor. The ADC may digitize a received signal across a range of frequencies that encompasses a first band of frequencies used for a first network and a second band of frequencies used for a second network. A sampling frequency of the ADC may be determined by a frequency of a clock signal output by the clock signal generator. The processor may determine whether the first network is active and whether the second network is active. The processor may configure the clock generator such that, when both of the first network and the second network are active, the clock signal is set to a first frequency, and when the first network is active and the second network is inactive, the clock signal is set to a second frequency.
