A speech system includes a speech encoding system and a speech decoding system. The speech encoding system includes a speech analyzer for identifying each of the speech segments (i.e., phonemes) in the received digitized speech signal. A pitch detector, a duration detector, and an amplitude detector are each coupled to the memory and the analyzer and detect various prosodic parameters of each received speech segment. A speech encoder generates a data signal that includes the speech segment IDs and the values of the corresponding prosodic parameters. The speech decoding system includes a digital data decoder and a speech synthesizer for generating a speech signal based on the segment IDs and prosodic parameter values.

Retaining prosody during speech analysis for later playback

A speech encoding system for encoding a digitized speech signal into a standard digital format, such as MIDI. The MIDI speech encoding system includes a memory storing a dictionary comprising a digitized pattern and a corresponding segment ID for each of a plurality of speech segments (i.e., phonemes). A speech analyzer identifies each of the segments in the digitized speech signal based on the dictionary. One or more prosodic parameter detectors measure values of the prosodic parameters of each received digitized speech segment. A MIDI speech encoder converts the segment IDs and the corresponding measured prosodic parameter values into a MIDI speech signal. A MIDI speech decoding system includes a MIDI data decoder and a speech synthesizer for converting the MIDI speech signal to a digitized speech signal.

A user of the desktop conferencing system is able to manipulate a persistent conference object where a persistent conference object is an object including a plurality of items of information pertaining to a desktop conference. Each of the conference parameters are monitored, updated and saved. It is then possible to retrieve and dynamically establish conference parameters of a conference stored in a persistent conference object by: (1) prompting a user for an identifier identifying a particular persistent conference object on disk; (2) opening the specified persistent conference object by copying it from disk to memory; (3) reading the conference parameters stored in the persistent conference object in memory; and (4) implementing the conference parameters to establish the desired conference environment.

The conference manager of a general purpose personal conference application is enhanced, including a request management and a send/receive function for exchanging 'business cards' electronically using a two-phase approach, a request phase and an answer phase. While request for another participant is automatic responsive to a connect/joint event, answering a request is conditionally depending on whether the receiving system is 'in conference'. The external manifestation of an electronic 'business card' (bizcard) is a visual presentation of information commonly found on physical business cards in a format that resembles a physical business card. Preferably, the visual presentation also includes a picture of the person named. Internally, the information including the data necessary to render the picture are maintained in data structures.

The conference manager of a conferencing application is enhanced to provide conditional termination service. In response to the receipt of a conference termination request, the conference manager provides cooperative applications as well as other connection dependent conferencing systems joined to the conference in progress opportunities to object to the conference termination request. If objections were received, the conference manager further provides a user of the conferencing system an opportunity to provide his/her inputs on whether the objections are to be overridden or sustained.
