Disclosed herein is a modular, scalable, and galvanically isolated power electronics converter topology for medium voltage AC (MVAC) to DC or high voltage AC (HVAC) to DC power conversion. A disclosed modular converter can comprise a low-voltage direct current bus and a centralized controller configured to regulate the low-voltage direct current bus. The modular converter can further comprise a plurality of three-phase blocks connected in series. Individual three-phase blocks of the plurality of three-phase blocks can comprise a plurality of single-phase modules connected in an input-series output-parallel configuration. The modular converter can further comprise a filter connected between a grid input and the plurality of three-phase blocks and a pulse-width modulator configured to generate encoded gate pulses for the individual three-phase blocks of the plurality of three-phase blocks.

Modular isolated power electronics converter for HVAC/MVAC to LVDC power conversion

Certain embodiments involve a modular medium voltage fast charger. The modular medium voltage fast charger can include: (1) a predictive power factor correction ('PFC') controller (or predictive controller) for series-interleaved multi-cell three-level boost ('SIMCB') converters, (2) an active neutral point clamped (&#x201c;NPC&#x201d;) dual active bridge (&#x201c;DAB&#x201d;) modulation scheme to achieve soft switching, (3) an auxiliary capacitor to reduce NPC DAB turn-off voltages, (4) a comprehensive and scalable protection circuit, and (5) a high-isolation pulse transformer with a bobbin for reducing coupling capacitance of the pulse transformer.

Modular medium voltage fast chargers

Unique systems, methods, techniques and apparatuses of a synchronous reluctance machine (SynRM) control are disclosed. One exemplary embodiment is a control device structured to operate a converter coupled to a synchronous reluctance machine and receive measurements of current. The device comprises a converter controller structured to detect a power supply restoration, operate the converter so as to transmit a series voltage vectors relative to the stationary reference frame to the stator of the synchronous reluctance machine, receive current measurements following the transmission of each of the voltage vectors, estimate the rotor position using the characteristics of the voltage vector and the received current measurements corresponding to at least one voltage vector, estimate the rotor speed using the characteristics of the voltage vectors and the received current measurements corresponding to at least two voltage vectors, and operate the converter so as to apply voltage to the stator.
