A rehabilitation system that assists an action of a paretic arm due to brain damage, such as a stroke, includes: a detecting unit configured to detect an assist action that a healthy arm assists the paretic arm; an assist unit configured to cause the paretic arm to carry out bending and stretching actions; an adjustment unit configured to adjust an operation timing, operation speed, bending load or stretching load of the assist unit in response to detection of the assist action by the detecting unit; and a control unit configured to cause the assist unit to operate in accordance with the operation timing, operation speed, bending load or stretching load, adjusted by the adjustment unit.

After sand of one layer is loaded into a sand layer elevator (20), a shading mask (38) is positioned above the sand, and a diffused laser beam is irradiated from a diffused laser irradiating source (16). Thereby, a predetermined range of sand under the shading mask (38) is exposed and this exposed portion is cured. This operation is repeated for a predetermined number of sand layers and cured portions are piled up to directly form a 3-D sand mould. A buildup valve comprising a valve body of a quench-hardenable, heat resistant steel having a valve face and a buildup layer formed on the valve face from a cobalt or nickel base superalloy having higher wear and heat resistances than the heat resistant steel is useful in internal combustion engines. A hardened layer is formed in the valve face portion adjacent the buildup layer and has a maximum thickness between 0.05 mm and 2.0 mm. The buildup layer thus has a reduced thickness between 0.1 mm and 0.5 mm. The buildup valve is produced by supplying and depositing a powder of the alloy on the valve face, and applying a scanning high flux energy laser or plasma beam to the powder deposit to cause the powder to quickly melt and then quickly solidify thereby forming the buildup layer and at the same time, to cause a surface layer of the valve body underlying the powder deposit to quickly heat and then quickly cool thereby forming the hardened layer.

Herein disclosed is a process for forming a dispersion alloy layer on a metallic base. The powder of an alloy system, which will separate into two or more multi-liquid phases at a temperature equal to or higher than its melting point and will solidify, when quenched, with its individual liquid phases being separate and in which the ratio of the minimum to the maximum specific weight its individual liquid phases is 0.3 or higher, such as the powder of any alloy system of Cu-Ni(15%)-Fe(8%)-Si(3%)-B(1.5%) is applied to a metallic base. The powder thus applied is then melting and agitated while being irradiated with a laser beam oscillated. The agitated melt of the powder is then quenched to solidify with the movement of the laser beam thereby to form on the metallic base the dispersion alloy layer in which the solid particles of at least one of those phase such as silicide particles are dispersed in the matrix of the remaining one of the phases.

Herein disclosed is a dispersion strengthened copper-base alloy having an excellent wear resistance, which alloy contains 5 to 30% (in weight) of nickel, 1 to 5% of silicon, 0.5 to 3% of boron and 4 to 30% of iron, the remainder being copper and unavoidable impurities, and having a structure in which hard particles composed chiefly of a silicide of iron-nickel system are dispersed in a copper-base matrix. The copper-base alloy is suitably cladded (or deposited) locally on a metallic base. Then, the structure is modified such that both the particles composed chiefly of the iron-nickel silicide and carbide particles are coexistently dispersed in the copper-base matrix.

In an engine valve comprising a valve body of an iron base material, a Stellite or similar alloy is clad on the body using a laser beam with a sufficient energy to form a cladding layer as a valve face such that the iron from the body-forming iron base material is diffused into the cladding layer throughout its thickness through an interface layer between the cladding layer and the valve body, whereby the cladding layer has 5 to 15 wt % of iron diffused and the interface layer has an iron content continuously decreasing from the iron content of the body-forming iron base material to that of the cladding layer.

This internal combustion engine cylinder head includes a main portion made substantially from aluminum alloy and having a valve port which has a circumferential valve seat surface for cooperation with a poppet valve to open and close communication through the valve port. A cladding layer is formed of copper alloy claddingly laid upon this valve seat surface, and an intermediate alloy layer is present between the copper alloy cladding layer and the main cylinder head portion, this intermediate alloy layer being composed essentially of an alloy between the aluminum alloy of the main cylinder head portion and the copper alloy of the cladding layer. Thereby, the anti-wear properties of the valve seat are desirably improved without making the fabrication process unduly troublesome or costly. The proportion of aluminum diffused into the copper alloy cladding layer from the main portion of the cylinder head should preferably be not more than about 15%. The thickness of the intermediate alloy layer should preferably be between about 5 microns and about 300 microns, and the thickness of the copper alloy cladding layer should preferably be at least about 50 microns. If 'x' denotes the thickness of the intermediate alloy layer in microns, this thickness value being between about 5 and about 300, and if 'y' denotes the thickness of the copper alloy cladding layer in mm, then preferably the relationship y=1.5254x+42.373 should at least approximately hold.

A method and apparatus are provided for hardening a surface of a cam which forms a chill layer of equal depth on the surface of the cam. The method includes the steps of rotating a cylinder cam and thereby oscillating a holder, rotating a camshaft on which the cam whose surface is to be hardened is located and emitting the high energy toward the surface to be hardened. The cylinder cam which is rotated includes a guide groove which includes at least two straight grooves and at least two `V` shape connecting portions so that `V` shape connecting portions connect the straight grooves and form a continuous peripheral guide groove on a surface of the cylinder cam. The holder which holds the camshaft is oscillated at a constant speed in the axial direction of the camshaft by the rotation of the cylinder cam. The camshaft is rotated in the circumferential direction of the camshaft concurrently with the oscillation of the holder. A torch is provided to emit the high energy to the surface of the cam concurrently with the oscillation of the holder and the rotation of the camshaft.
