Methods, systems, and compositions for the solution-phase deposition of thin films that form artificial SEIs on conversion anodes in lithium-ion batteries. In certain aspects, the solution-phase deposition methods comprise sequentially processing a lithium-ion conversion anode with multiple liquid reagents to form a monolayer or stacks of monolayers forming the thin film coating. The conversion anodes produced by the methods and systems described herein have a surface coating that is electrically insulating, consumes little to no lithium, is permeable to lithium transport, is impermeable to electrolyte and is mechanically robust against volumetric expansion.

Solution-phase deposition of thin films on conversion anodes in lithium-ion batteries

Provided herein are battery cells comprising artificial solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) layers used as protective coatings on electrodes. The SEI layers are produced by liquid-phase deposition (LDP). The battery cell may comprise an anode, a cathode, an electrolyte disposed between the anode and the cathode, a polymer separator disposed between the anode and the cathode, and a casing containing the anode, the cathode, the electrolyte, and the polymer separator, wherein at least one or the anode or cathode comprises an SEI layer produced by an LDP method.

Solution-deposited electrode coatings for thermal runaway mitigation in rechargeable batteries

Methods, systems, and compositions for the liquid-phase deposition (LPD) of thin films. The thin films can be coated onto the surface of porous components of electrochemical devices, such as battery electrodes. Embodiments of the present disclosure achieve a faster, safer, and more cost-effective means for forming uniform, conformal layers on non-planar microstructures than known methods. In one aspect, the methods and systems involve exposing the component to be coated to different liquid reagents in sequential processing steps, with optional intervening rinsing and drying steps. Processing may occur in a single reaction chamber or multiple reaction chambers.

The EC device includes a working electrode, a counter electrode, a solid-state polymer electrolyte disposed therebetween, and an ionically conductive and electrically insulating protective layer disposed between the electrolyte and the working electrode. The control unit is configured to control a sweep voltage applied between the working and counter electrodes, such that the sweep voltage is applied when an open circuit voltage (OCV) between the working and counter electrodes is less than a threshold voltage.

An electrochromic device includes a nanostructured transition metal oxide bronze layer that includes one or more transition metal oxide and one or more dopant. The electrochromic device also includes nanoparticles containing one or more transparent conducting oxide (TCO), a solid state electrolyte, a counter electrode, and at least one protective layer to prevent degradation of the one or more nanostructured transition metal oxide bronze. The nanostructured transition metal oxide bronze selectively modulates transmittance of near-infrared (NIR) and visible radiation as a function of an applied voltage to the device.
