A method is provided in one example embodiment and includes analyzing characteristics of traffic associated with an application in a data communications network; defining each of a plurality of Access Point Names ('APNs') for terminating traffic in the data communications network; comparing the application traffic characteristics with the APNs; and selecting one of the APNs based on results of the comparing, in which the selected one of the APNs is assigned to terminate the application traffic. In some embodiments, the application traffic characteristics include at least one of average data packet size, average uplink traffic volume, average downlink traffic volume, triggering traffic data generation, and session frequency. The method may further include periodically re-comparing the application traffic characteristics with the APNs and selecting a different one of the APNs based on results of the recomparing to terminate the application traffic.

Selective access point name assignment based on machine-to-machine traffic analysis

To re-establish a direct tunnel between an access node and a gateway router in a wireless network, a control node that provides mobility management on behalf of mobile stations detects restart of the gateway router. In response to detecting restart of the gateway router, the control node sends context information regarding a previously established direct tunnel to the gateway router to enable the gateway router to re-establish the direct tunnel.

In one embodiment, a machine type communication (MTC) device can receive registration associated with a new device upon the new device registration for a computer network. The MTC device can further determine a machine-to-machine (MTM) service class for the new device based on the registration data with the service class associated with at least one network route for messages destined for the new device. The MTC device can further receive a trigger message destined for the device and route the trigger message according to the network route associated with the determined MTM service class.

Systems and methods for transferring a session or components of a session in a communication network are provided. The components of the session include media flows and control over the media flows. The user can initiate a transfer of a existing session with a mobile device such as user equipment (UE) to one or more devices that may lead to fan-out or fan-in to multiple devices. This can include separating the delivery of media from the control of the delivery. For example, a UE can be designated a controller to control another UE, such as a television (TV). In providing the capability to transfer these sessions, a gateway is used to implement network functions that allow the streaming to be controlled and delivered to the respective UEs. In some embodiments, the gateway can be flexible and its operation modified according to messages it receives.

The Home Subscriber Server being arranged to transmit a reset message to components such as application servers and S-CSCF in the IMS when it undergoes a reset. The receipt of a reset message causing the component to mark the terminals that the HSS stores the data for as not confirmed. The component then, either automatically or in response to a message, transmits a message to the Home Subscriber Server to request user profile data for a user terminal connecting to the IMS or accessing services from the IMS.
