An implant is provided comprising a substrate having one or more nanoceria coatings coated at least partially thereon, wherein the one or more nanoceria coatings comprise surface cerium having a 3+/4+ oxidation state ratio such that the one or more nanoceria coatings exhibit catalase mimetic activity, superoxide dismutase mimetic activity, or both. Methods are provided for forming a nanoceria coating. The coating has nanoceria having a surface cerium 3+/4+ oxidation state ratio such that such that the coating exhibits catalase mimetic activity, superoxide dismutase mimetic activity, or both. Also disclosed is a method of reducing degradation of an implant by placing nanoceria in proximity to a bone-implant interface.

Implant and coating to reduce osteolysis

Disclosed is a composition immunologically targeted to Alzheimer's disease (AD), the composition containing amine functionalized nanoparticles of Cerium oxide coated with polyethylene glycol and bearing an antibody specific for an amyloid-beta antigen associated with AD. The invention also includes a medication manufactured with the targeted nanoceria particles and methods of treatment by administering the targeted nanoceria particles to patients in need thereof.

Nanoparticles of cerium oxide targeted to an amyloid beta antigen of alzheimer's disease and associated methods

Methods of mitigating the effects of radiation exposure or providing a radioprotective effect in a subject are provided herein. The methods include administering a therapeutically effective amount of cerium oxide nanoparticles to the subject to mitigate the effects of radiation exposure or to offer a radioprotective effect to the subject. The cerium oxide nanoparticles are suitably less than 20 nm in diameter and have over 50% of the cerium in the 3+ oxidation state.

Methods of using cerium oxide nanoparticles to mitigate or protect against radiation injury

Methods of using cerium oxide nanoparticles to promote angiogenesis are described. In a particular embodiment, a method of promoting angiogenesis in animal tissue comprises contacting the tissue with a composition comprising cerium oxide nanoparticles effective for stimulating proliferation of endothelial cells associated with the tissue.
