In order to provide a speech input system for having access from a mobile terminal such as a PDA or a portable phone, or a stationary terminal such as a home telephone, a TV set, or a PC to a network through speech, and receiving a service from a provider for providing map information, music information, broadcast program information, and telephone information, the speech input system comprises speech input terminalsprovided with a speech input/output mean, and an access status display mean, a speech portal serverprovided with a speech recognizing mean for receiving a speech to recognize it as a text, a command converting mean for checking the recognized text with a command text dictionary, and separating it into a command text and an object text, and a conversation control mean for having an access to, and receiving a service from a provider which provides different information based on the separated texts, and providing the speech input terminal with the service, and a providerfor searching information based on the command text and the object text received from the speech portal server, and serves the speech portal server with a search result.

A character recognizing apparatus capable of recognizing discriminatively characters written continuously, irregularly and/or containing modification is provided which apparatus includes an input unit for allowing a handwritten character to be inputted to thereby output coordinate-points string, a dictionary for storing therein a plurality of character codes and character patterns corresponding to the character codes, respectively, an element decomposition module for decomposing the coordinates string outputted from the input unit into a plurality of elements which constitute the character, and a matching module for determining corresponding distance values for the elements of the character pattern stored in the dictionary and the elements of character pattern of the inputted character for each of the character patterns stored in the dictionary, to thereby correct the distance values determined on the basis of the elements bearing no correspondence.

A display device has a touch pad and a display lamintated together to form a screen, That screen is connected to a controller which processes signals generated by physical contact with the touch pad and activates the display to display e.g. characters input by a stylus to the touch pad. The display device is connected to an external device (e.g. a computer) and video signals from the external device are received via a video input and may be displayed on the display. Also the controller can transmit to the external device via an output. Thus, the display can display simultaneously information from the external device and information input to the touch pad. The present invention relates to a multi-user pattern data processing system configured for various kinds of patterns, such as characters, to learn efficiently and effectively. The present invention comprises an input arrangement 1 having patterns entered therein from a plurality of users, a dictionary 2 having patterns and attributes of the patterns belonging thereto defined therein, a recognizing arrangement 4 that receives the entered pattern and a group attribute and retrieves from among the patterns entered in the dictionary and having a corresponding group attribute to feed out the category, and a dictionary editing arrangement 5 for extracting a pattern used in common by a group before editing the pattern, such as entering it in the common dictionary, with the group having the user made to belong thereto. Information providing system

An information processing system includes a desk with a planar display unit which also accommodates physical objects to be manipulated by the operator. The physical objects are representative of physical objects normally used in office environments when handling paper files. A camera is provided which continuously monitors the desk display surface and is coupled to an electronic computer which can be controlled by the operator by moving the physical objects and the operator hands to simulate paper processing tasks, such as mailing, faxing, filing, opening files, editing and the like. An operator driven menu is provided on the desk display surface for facilitating operator classification and storage of physical object shapes of those physical objects which are to be used.

A character recognition apparatus for inferring the entire character string solely from a user-input handwritten keyword and displaying the inferred result as a candidate character string. The apparatus of the invention comprises: a word dictionary storing word identification information and hierarchy information for layering a plurality of words into a hierarchy and for recognizing each of the words within the hierarchy; a character transition probability table a4 storing probabilities of transitions from any one character to another, and those pieces of the word identification information which correspond to combinations of characters resulting from the transitions; and an optimization unit for using the character transition probability table in optimizing candidate character strings obtained by a recognition unit. The word dictionary is searched for a word defined by the word identification information which corresponds to the optimized candidate character string, whereby the searched word is retrieved which applies to the hierarchy information and which has yet to be input.
