An alignment guide for total ankle replacement surgery and a method of creating and using the alignment guide. The alignment guide has a surface that interfaces with a corresponding surface of a superior aspect a talus of a patient, and as second surface portion that interfaces with a corresponding distal surface of a section of a tibia of the patient. When the alignment guide is in position, it maintains the ankle of the patient in a preselected position.

Patient-specific template for total ankle replacement

A prosthetic ankle including a talar component and a tibial component. At least a portion of top surface of the talar component has a convex curvature, relative to a location above the top surface, in the anterior to posterior direction as viewed in a sagittal plane cross-section, and a concave curvature relative to a location above the top surface, in the medial to lateral direction. An axis of cone projected based on medial and lateral circles located in medial and lateral sagittal plane cross-sections which approximate the average radius of curvature of the top surface of the talar component as viewed in medial and lateral sagittal plane cross-sections, has a total offset angle from the lateral direction in the range of 0&#xb0; to 45&#xb0;. In another aspect, the present invention further comprises a bearing component adapted for location between the tibial component and the talar component.

Prosthetic ankle

A prosthetic ankle comprising a talar component and a tibial component. At least a portion of top surface of the talar component has a convex curvature, relative to a location above the top surface, in the anterior to posterior direction as viewed in a sagittal plane cross-section, a concave curvature relative to a location above the top surface, in the medial to lateral direction, and an average radius of curvature of at least a major portion of the medial side of the top surface of the talar component is larger than an average radius of curvature of at least a major portion of the lateral side of the top surface of the talar component as viewed in sagittal plane cross-sections on the lateral and medial sides. A bearing component for location between the tibial and talar component is also described.

Prosthetic ankle with conic saddle shaped joint

The invention is directed to a cervical spine protection apparatus one or more composite bands attached to provide restraint of one or more motions of the cervical spine of a wearer. The apparatus is designed to protect a wearer from incurring cervical spinal injuries, and/or to reduce the severity of cervical spine injuries without substantially compromising the normal functional range of motion of the wearer's cervical spine.

Cervical spine protection apparatus and methods of use

A functional electrical stimulation brace responsive to various positions of an intended wearer's foot. The device includes a plurality of sensors positioned at different locations under the intended wearer's foot to detect the current position of the foot. Outputs from the sensors are fed to a controller that uses logic to activate an electrical stimulation unit that stimulates the peroneal muscles of a patient at the appropriate times during the patient's gait. The device may also employ mechanical stabilization of the ankle in addition to the functional electrical stimulation by means of an ankle foot orthosis with a variable resistance hinge. The electrodes are embedded in fixed locations in the brace upper portion so that optimal location of the electrodes relative to the peroneal muscles is maintained every time the device is applied. Also provided is a method for assistance and rehabilitation for a patient by electrical stimulation of the peroneal muscles. In the method, the position of the foot is detected and the peroneal muscles are stimulated responsive to particular positions of the patient's foot in order to activate the muscles at the appropriate times during the patient's gait. The device also provides lateral and torsional stability by means of the ankle-foot orthosis.

Orthosis and method of use for treatment and rehabilitation of dropfoot

A method of anchoring soft tissue to bone is provided comprising providing a mixture of a hydrophobic monomer and a hydrophilic monomer and a crosslinking agent to form a swellable copolymer, adding a soft tissue attachment element to the mixture, wherein a portion of the soft tissue attachment element protrudes from the mixture, polymerizing the mixture to form the copolymer, implanting the copolymer into bone and attaching a soft tissue to the protruding portion of the attachment element to anchor the soft tissue to the bone.

Swelling type copolymeric composite material with self-fixation

An acoustic catheter reduces transmission losses and unwanted heating of the transmission member by driving the catheter a rotary motor. The catheter includes an elongated body and a shaft extending longitudinally therethrough. The shaft is adapted for coupling to a rotary motor. A rotary-to-axial motion converter is coupled to the shaft at distal end of the catheter, for converting rotary shaft motion into axial acoustic motion. In one embodiment, the rotary-to-axial motion converter includes a swash plate driven by the shaft. The swash plate defines a surface which, at an angularly fixed reference point, moves axially in response to the rotary motion of the swash plate. A follower bears on the swash plate, for moving axially in response to axial motion of the follower. The follower includes a projection bearing on the swash plate and a spring urging the follower toward the swash plate. In one embodiment, the swash plate has a sinusoidal surface, while another embodiment has notches cut into the surface. The follower generates acoustic energy within a fluid medium, and may have a concave fluid coupling surface. To aspirate the material removed from arterial walls, one or more lumens extend through the catheter. In a particular embodiment of the invention, the rotary shaft is hollow, in order to allow a guide wire to pass therethrough.

Acoustic catheter with rotary drive

An apparatus which determines the load-displacement and flexibility characteristics of an anatomical joint. The apparatus includes a first frame for receiving a first body portion and a second frame for receiving a second body portion which is pivotable with respect to the first body portion. A pivot assembly is interconnected between the first frame and the second frame such that the second frame is pivotable with respect to the first frame about first and second frame pivot axes. The body portions are positioned on the frames such that the first and second joint pivot axes are generally aligned with the first and second frame pivot axes, respectively. Angular potentiometers are used to determine the angular displacement of the second frame with respect to the first frame about at least one of the first and second frame pivot axes upon application of at least one force to the second body portion. Torque sensors are also provided for determining a torque about at least one of the first and second frame pivot axes upon application of the force. The determined angular displacement and torque are indicative of the load-displacement and flexibility characteristics of the joint.
