Technologies are described for providing turning in virtual reality environments. For example, some implementations use roll turning that involves rotating around an outer edge of a control input, some implementations use tap turning to move directly to a location indicated by a control movement, and some implementations involve combinations of roll turning and tap turning.

Roll turning and tap turning for virtual reality environments

Rendering of a dynamic workplane in a 3D rendering environment accessed through a two dimensional user interface is provided. The dynamic workplane is associated to a rendering tool in a rendering application for the 3D environment. The dynamic workplane orientation and position are dependent on the view perspective, the rendering tool selected and an interaction location in the 3D environment. The location and orientation of the dynamic workplane can change with each interaction by the user, each tool selected, and with changes in perspective relative to the 3D environment.

Aspects of the technology described herein can insert a 2D object into a 3D environment utilizing a monoscopic view with controlled convergence. An exemplary computing device may use a depth regulator to determine a depth associated with a stereoscopic view. Moreover, a view converter in the exemplary computing device can transform the stereoscopic view into a monoscopic view with a controlled convergence distance. Further, a display configurator in the exemplary computing device can cause an external object to be displayed in the monoscopic view.
