Disclosed herein are a liquid crystal display device, in which a bi-directional internal gate drive circuit is used to cut the number of data lines in half, and a method of driving such liquid crystal display devices. The liquid crystal device includes a pixel array having a plurality of pixels on a lower substrate. The pixels are configured such that two pixels horizontally adjacent to each other are paired to share the same data line. First and second gate drive circuits are housed in the left and right sides of the lower substrate so as to be independently operated in the left and right side of the pixel array. The first gate drive circuit is formed of first to nodd shift registers, and the second gate drive circuit is formed of first to neven shift registers.

Disclosed herein is an LCD device having a drive area directly formed inside a non-pixel area of a substrate without an additional drive IC. The LCD device includes a first substrate having a pixel area and a non-pixel area disposed peripherally to the pixel area. The pixel area has a thin film transistor and a pixel electrode in each sub-pixel defined by gate and data lines crossing each other. A second substrate formed in opposition to the first substrate includes a color filter layer and a black matrix layer. A liquid crystal layer is formed between the first and second substrates. A liquid crystal display device and driving method is provided. The liquid crystal display device includes a first data line to which a data voltage is supplied and a second data line separated from the first data line with a pixel row therebetween and connected to the first data line in top and bottom ends. A first gate line crosses the first and second data lines. A second gate line crosses the first and second data lines. A first switch device is operable to supply the data voltage from the first data line to a pixel electrode of an odd-numbered pixel row in response to the first scan pulse.
