This invention provides a vertically aligned liquid crystal display, including a first polarizing plate and a second polarizing plate having absorption axes perpendicular to each other and a vertically aligned panel provided therebetween and including vertically aligned liquid crystals having negative dielectric anisotropy, in which a +A-film and a +C-film are provided between the first polarizing plate and the vertically aligned panel, the +C-film is positioned between the first polarizing plate and the +A-film, and the optic axis of the +A-film is parallel to or perpendicular to the absorption axis of the first polarizing plate. According to this invention, the contrast of the vertically aligned liquid crystal display can be improved at surface-facing angle and tilt angle thereof and the color shift depending on the viewing angle in a dark state can be minimized, thus greatly increasing the viewing angle range of the vertically aligned liquid crystal display.

Disclosed herein is an IPS-LCD using two sheets of negative (&#x2212;) biaxial retardation films and one +C-plate. The IPS-LCD has a superior contrast ratio at the surface-facing angle and tilt angles and undergoes a minimal color change with viewing angles in a black state, thereby providing a wider viewing angle.

An IPS-LCD, in which the direction of an optical axis and retardation values are adjusted according to the disposition of a phase retardation film replacing one protective film, obtains a contrast ratio similar to that of an IPS-LCD having upper and lower protective films, and has a small thickness. The IPS-LCD includes first and second polarizing plates (), an IPS panel (), and a first protective film. Absorption axes () of the first and second polarizing plates () are orthogonal to each other, and an optical axis of a liquid crystal in the IPS panel () and the absorption axis () are parallel with each other. A second phase retardation film, obtained by coating a biaxial film () with a uniaxial C film (), is disposed between the second polarizing plate () and the IPS panel () and is used as a second protective film.
