One aspect of the specification is the use of a virtual entity to represent the bandwidth bottleneck point in a network. Areas of the network where bandwidth does not need to be managed can be modeled as zones. This model enables more flexibility as the virtual bottleneck point can represent a collection of components (e.g. routers), or a portion of a real component (e.g. a router could be represented by multiple virtual bottleneck points with different purposes.) This model can also allow a user to decide which points in their network should be managed, independent of the underlying data network infrastructure. These virtual entities can be placed between areas of the network, and configured with specific policies. Bandwidth usage across these virtual entities can be tracked and compared to the configured bandwidth limit available to the application at each bottleneck point. When the bandwidth available at the bottleneck point is fully utilized, additional calls can be blocked or rerouted. Policies can be applied to permit certain calls to proceed despite the fact that bandwidth is fully utilized, or to block certain calls when bandwidth usage is approaching the maximum level. Bandwidth management can be distributed or centralized with information shared throughout a distributed network.

Network traffic management

A system and method of providing an assignable registration between a device and a user for IP telephony, wireless telephony and other forms of collaborative systems is provided wherein loss of association is detected and a policy language is used to capture and execute user preferences in the event of such loss. A method and system are also provided for utilizing coupling between a thin client and a telephone to provide for device association.

System and method for transition of association between communication devices

This specification can provide resource allocation in peer-to-peer networks. This specification describes techniques whereby individual resources can in certain circumstances share their local views to create a network-wide view. The use of a performance manager facilitates this sharing. The sharing of fault information both access multiple devices and for a single device across restarts is also provided. A network-based aggregator for performance and fault analysis is also provided so that complex analysis algorithms can be provided centrally to assist network performance management.

Distributed network management

A system and method of associating at least two communication devices is provided. First information identifying a first communication device and second information identifying a second communication device is received via a link layer protocol over a data network. It is determined if the first communication device and the second communication device are co-located based on first link layer data associated with the first communication device and second link layer data associated with the second communication device. An association is triggered between the first information and the second information if the first communication device and the second communication device are determined to be co-located.

System and method for associating communication devices

A system and method for providing early detection of encrypted signals within a secure connection for voice over Internet protocol (VoIP). The system and method includes a non-complex, in-band, and early encryption detector within the voice path. A transmitter sends out a known pattern. Based upon the received pattern, the receiver decides whether its encryption capabilities match up with those of the transmitter. If the capabilities do not match, then the receiver waits for the signalling message for the correct mode of operation. No packets are utilized until the receiver and transmitter encryption capabilities are matched.

Early detection system and method for encrypted signals within packet networks

A system for remote assembly of messages to create a control message includes a shared coordination space for assembly of messages, and a plurality of components for performing predefined actions and for exchanging messages according to a predetermined ontology. The plurality of components includes a first component for directing other ones of the components to publish information on the coordination space and in response gather several distinct pieces of the information and assemble the distinct pieces as a message by which to control the actions of the component. According to a preferred embodiment, the shared coordination space is a tuple space, one of the components is a call control application for controlling a communication switch, and at least one other component is a directory application containing location information.

System and method for remote assembly of messages to create a control message

A network implemented communication system, comprising a Local Area Network (LAN), a plurality of endpoints connected to the LAN, each of the endpoints including a communication application for communicating via a standard protocol, at least one server connected to the LAN for third party control of communications between the endpoints, and software within each of the endpoints and the server for implementing features which do not require direct connection between the endpoints.

A telephone system for permitting multiple users to log in to a plurality of line appearances on a multi-line telephone set in order to access personalized services associated with individual user profiles for the users. The telephone set is provided with individual displays and message notification lights for the individual line appearances. Users identify themselves by logging in to a particular line appearance via telephone key input of user name and password, or other suitable log in function.

A method for minimizing toll call costs for completing a call at an originating PBX within a network of connected PBXs to a remote destination, comprising the steps of generating within the originating PBX and communicating to each other PBX within the network a message calling for bids from each PBX for least cost routing of the call according to respective local routing plans, determining within the originating PBX a least cost direct route for completing the call, determining from the respective local routing plans the least cost routing for each other PBX and communicating the bids to the originating PBX, and comparing and in response selecting within the originating PBX a least costly one of the least cost direct routes and the least cost routing for each other PBX for completing the call to the remote destination.

A method of defining the operation of switching system peripherals is comprised of storing a software program for operating the peripherals in a switching system; storing at least one table of data for access by the program for defining operating parameters of a corresponding at least one peripheral; modelling a prototype of the peripheral in a remote host system by creating a human-machine-interface simulating the peripheral; storing a control table of data corresponding to the modelled prototype in a memory for the host system; and downloading the control table into the one table, whereby operation of the peripheral is controlled by the operating software programs and the data in the at least one table.
