An example device in accordance with an aspect of the present disclosure includes a diamond waveguide disposed on a substrate. The substrate includes a dielectric material. A tuner is to extend from the substrate, and is disposed at least in part over the waveguide. The tuner includes a tuner electrode to control a variable distance between the tuner and the waveguide to vary an effective refractive index of the waveguide.

A multiview backlight and a multiview display employ a microprism multibeam element to emit a plurality of directional light beams having principal angular directions corresponding to view directions of the multiview display. The multiview backlight includes a light guide and the microprism multibeam element extending from a surface of the light guide. The microprism multibeam element has an input aperture configured to receive a portion of guided light and an output aperture configured to emit the plurality of directional light beams. The microprism multibeam element includes a microprism having an inclined sidewall configured to reflect the received guided light portion and provide the plurality of directional light beams. The multiview display includes the multiview backlight and an array of multiview pixels configured to provide different views of the multiview display from the plurality of directional light beams.

An active-control optical resonator includes an oxide layer; a ring resonator arranged in a loop and positioned on the oxide layer; a tangential optical waveguide optically coupled to the ring resonator; a translatable body configured to selectively move into an evanescent field region of the ring resonator; a first electrode positioned on the translatable body, the first electrode comprising indium tin oxide; and a second electrode positioned between the oxide layer and the ring resonator.

Active-control optical resonator

An optical coupling system includes an optical signal source to provide an optical signal from an aperture. The system also includes a substantially planar high-contrast grating (HCG) lens to convert an optical mode of the optical signal to provide a converted optical signal having a mode-isolating intensity profile. The system further includes an optical element to receive the converted optical signal. The optical signal source and the substantially planar HCG lens can be arranged to substantially mitigate coupling of a reflected optical signal associated with the converted optical signal that is reflected from the optical element to the aperture of the optical signal source based on a reflected mode-isolating intensity profile.

Mode conversion for optical isolation

A vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) nanoscope is provided. The VCSEL nanoscope combines a VCSEL with a nano-scale aperture using a support member to separate the aperture from the VCSEL emission face. The resulting device is a useful near-field probe with a wide variety of applications.

Tactile feedback for touch screens is provided by an overlay structure disposed on the top surface of the touch screen. This overlay structure can be in either of two states. In the first state (non-typing), the overlay structure has a uniform top surface. In the second state (typing), the overlay structure top surface has localized regions of increased vertical elevation to provide tactile feedback for typing. The overlay structure is configured to be switched between these two states by actuator(s) disposed to provide mechanical force(s) in lateral direction(s) to the overlay structure. Preferably, the actuator is a latching actuator (e.g., magnetic solenoid) that does not consume power to hold the overlay structure in either of its states. Thus, power is only consumed to switch the state of the overlay structure.

Low power touch screen overlays for providing tactile feedback

Low loss optical apertures are provided. A silicon intermediate layer sandwiched between a metal aperture layer and a dielectric layer has been found to offer a good combination of low optical loss combined with superior mechanical properties.
