The invention relates to a process for upgrading hydrocarbonaceous feedstreams by hydroprocessing using bulk bimetallic catalysts. More particularly, the invention relates to a catalytic hydrotreating process for the removal of sulfur and nitrogen from a hydrocarbon feed such as a fuel or a lubricating oil feed. The catalyst is a bulk catalyst containing a Group VIII metal and a Group VIB metal.

Hydroprocessing using bulk bimetallic catalysts

The present invention pertains to a sulfur-containing catalyst composition suitable for the hydrotreating of hydro-carbon feeds which comprises a Group VIB metal component selected from molybdenum, tungsten, and mixtures thereof, a Group V metal component selected from vanadium, niobium, tantalum, and mixtures thereof, and a Group VIII metal component selected from nickel, cobalt, iron, and mixtures thereof, the metal components (calculated as oxides) making up at least 50 wt. % of the catalyst, wherein the molar ratio between the metal components satisfies the following formula: (Group VIB+Group V):(Group VIII)=0.5-2:1. This catalyst has been found to show a high activity in sulfur removal in combination with good aromatics removal properties.

The present invention pertains to a process for regenerating and rejuvenating an additive-based hydrotreating catalyst containing Group VIB and Group VIII hydrogenation metals. The process comprises the steps of regenerating the catalyst by contacting it with an oxygen-containing gas at a maximum temperature of 500&#xb0; C., followed by rejuvenating the catalyst by contacting it with an organic additive comprising an organic compound, other than a compound that the catalyst is contacted with in the course of its use as a catalyst prior to regeneration and rejuvenation. The organic additive is incorporated into the catalyst. If necessary, the catalyst may then be dried at such a temperature that at least 50% of the additive is maintained in the catalyst. The process according to the invention makes it possible to restore the activity of a used additive-based hydrotreating catalyst to its original level, or even to improve it to above that level.

Process for regenerating and rejuvenating additive-based catalysts

The present invention pertains to a process for activating a catalyst composition comprising at least one hydrogenation metal component of Group VI and/or Group VIII of the Periodic Table, and an S-containing organic additive, wherein the catalyst is contacted with hydrogen at a temperature between room temperature and about 600&#xb0; C., preferably about 100-450&#xb0; C., and prior to or during the contacting with hydrogen the catalyst is contacted with an organic liquid. Preferably, the contacting with the organic liquid is carried out prior to the contacting with hydrogen. The organic liquid may be a hydrocarbon with a boiling range of 150-500&#xb0; C., preferably white oil, gasoline, diesel, or gas oil or mineral lube oil. It was found that the application of an organic liquid prior to or during the hydrogen treatment results in catalysts with an increased activity. The invention also comprises catalyst made by the above process and the use of such catalyst in hydrotreating.

Process for activating a catalyst containing an S-containing additive

The present invention pertains to a process for the hydroprocessing of hydrocarbon feedstocks wherein said hydrocarbon feedstocks are contacted, at hydroprocessing conditions, with a catalyst composition comprising at least one Group VIII non-noble metal component and at least two Group VIB metal components. The catalyst composition further comprises at least about 0.01 mole of an organic oxygen-containing additive per mole of the total of Group VIB metals and Group VIII non-noble metals present in the catalyst composition. The total of the Group VIII and Group VIB metal components, calculated as oxides, make up at least about 50 wt. % of the catalyst composition, calculated on dry weight.

Process for the hydroprocessing of hydrocarbon feedstocks

The present invention pertains to a process for sulfiding a catalyst composition comprising at least one hydrogenation metal component of Group VI and/or Group VIII of the Periodic Table, and an organic additive wherein the catalyst composition is first contacted with an organic liquid, followed by the catalyst being contacted with hydrogen and a sulfur-containing compound in the gaseous phase, wherein less than about 40%, preferably less than about 35%, more preferably less than about 25%, most preferably less than about 15%, of the sulfur present in the sulfided catalyst is added with the organic liquid. The process of the present invention makes it possible to use additive-containing catalysts without loss of activity in units which cannot effect gas phase start-up or are required to carry out a pressure test. The organic liquid may be a hydrocarbon with a boiling range of about 150-500&deg; C., preferably gasoline, white spirit, diesel, gas oil, mineral lube oil, or white oil. The step of contacting the catalyst with hydrogen and a sulfur-containing compound may take place in one step at a temperature of about 150-450&deg; C. It may also take place in two steps, with the first step being performed at a temperature which is lower than that of the second step, with the first step being carried out at a temperature of about 100-250&deg; C. and the second step at a temperature of about 150-450&deg; C.

Process for sulfiding an additive-containing catalyst

The invention pertains to a process for the hydroprocessing of a hydrocarbon feedstock wherein said feedstock is contacted at hydroprocessing conditions with a catalyst composition which comprises bulk catalyst particles which comprise at least one Group VIII non-noble metal and at least two Group VIB metals. The Group VIII and Group VIB metals comprise from about 50 wt. % to about 100 wt. %, calculated as oxides, of the total weight of the bulk catalyst particles. The metals are present in the catalyst composition in their oxidic and/or sulfidic state. The catalyst composition has an X-ray diffraction pattern in which the characteristic full width at half maximum does not exceed 2.5&deg; when the Group VIB metals are molybdenum, tungsten, and, optionally, chromium, or does not exceed 4.0&deg; when the Group VIB metals are molybdenum and chromium or tungsten and chromium.

Process for preparing a mixed metal catalyst composition

The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of a hydroprocessing catalyst, to the catalyst composition obtainable by said process, and to the use of said catalyst composition in hydroprocessing applications. The process comprises the steps of combining and reacting at least one Group VIII non-noble metal component in solution and at least two Group VIB metal components in solution in a reaction mixture to obtain an oxygen-stable precipitate, and sulfiding the precipitate.
