A system and method are disclosed of using a calorimeter apparatus for measuring lumped and two dimensional heat generation of a battery cell having a battery cell surface. The apparatus can include a first thermoelectric assembly, a second thermoelectric assembly, and at least two heat flux sensors positioned between the first and second thermoelectric assemblies. The first and second thermoelectric assemblies can be operable to selectively receive the battery cell between the first and second thermoelectric assemblies and substantially maintain the temperature of the battery cell surface in conformity with a predetermined temperature profile. When the battery cell is positioned between the first and second thermoelectric assemblies, the at least two heat flux sensors are operable to measure heat generation rates of the battery cell at corresponding portions of the battery cell surface.

Multifunctional calorimeter for measurements of lumped and two dimensional heat generation rates and entropy coefficients of pouch type lithium-ion battery

A charging apparatus includes a control unit configured to determine an average ion concentration, a surface ion concentration and a solid phase potential for anode particles and an electrolyte potential in an anode, using a predefined electrochemical reduced order model. The control unit is further configured to determine a side reaction rate from the solid phase potential and the electrolyte potential. The control unit is further configured to reduce the magnitude of the charging current applied to a secondary battery based on at least one of a cutoff voltage, the surface ion concentration and the side reaction rate.

Charging apparatus and method of secondary battery

A battery electric device includes a battery cell, e.g., a pouch, prismatic, or cylindrical cell, connectable to an electric load, and a direct-to-air thermoelectric assembly (TEA) or another heat pump connected to a surface of the cell. A pressure control device maintains constant pressure on the cell surface when the cell is connected to the load. Connection to the load causes the TEA/heat pump to pump heat from the cell. A sensor, e.g., thermocouple(s) and/or heat flux sensor(s), generate an output voltage signal indicative of the quantity of heat. A battery system includes the device and a processor in communication with the cell, the load, and the power supply. The processor generates an electronic control signal in response to the quantity of heat.

Evaluation of cell-level heat generation in battery electric system using direct-to-air heat pump

A system and method for rapid lithium ion battery charging are provided. The method for rapid charging a lithium ion battery may include generating a reduced order electrochemical model (ROM) of the lithium ion battery in which a state-of-charge (SOC) model, a side reaction model and a degradation model are embedded. The method may further include calculating an SOC, a side reaction rate, and a lithium plating rate from the ROM. The method may further include generating a charging protocol based on the SOC and a required SOC, and applying the charging protocol to the lithium ion battery.

System and method for rapid charging lithium ion battery

A method of rapidly charging a battery includes: (a) applying a charge to the battery using a charging profile; (b) monitoring a terminal voltage of the battery; (c) using a mathematical model to estimate a desired temporal state of charge of the battery and to estimate a predicted terminal voltage; (d) using the monitored terminal voltage of the battery and the predicted terminal voltage to determine an error; (e) applying the error to calculate a calculated state of charge of the battery; and (f) controlling the charge applied by the charging profile to urge the calculated state of charge of the battery toward the desired temporal state of charge of the battery. For use with lithium ion batteries, such feedback is used to limit ion concentration levels. Preferably, a Reduced Order Model is used to minimize computational requirements and facilitate real-time calculations.

Rapid battery charging method and system

An air and coolant control system comprising: a heat source configured to receive air, generate heat, receive coolant, conduct the received coolant to a coolant outlet, and transfer the generated heat to the received coolant, thereby removing the generated heat from the heat source as the coolant is conducted out of the heat source; an air supply source configured to supply the air to the heat source; an air supply control system configured to adjust the supply of air from the air supply source to the heat source based on a dynamic feedback temperature characteristic from the heat source; a coolant supply source configured to supply the coolant to the heat source; and a coolant control system configured to adjust the flow rate of the coolant based on an estimated feed-forward heat source characteristic and to adjust the temperature of the coolant based on the dynamic feedback temperature characteristic.
