An image sensor architecture with multi-bit sampling is implemented within an image sensor system. A pixel signal produced in response to light incident upon a photosensitive element is converted to a multiple-bit digital value representative of the pixel signal. If the pixel signal exceeds a sampling threshold, the photosensitive element is reset. During an image capture period, digital values associated with pixel signals that exceed a sampling threshold are accumulated into image data.

Conditional-reset, multi-bit read-out image sensor

A hybrid bonded image sensor has a photodiode die with macrocells having at least one photodiode and a bond contact; a supporting circuitry die with multiple supercells, each supercell having at least one macrocell unit bonded to the bond contact of a macrocell of the photodiode die. Each macrocell unit has a reset transistor adapted to reset photodiodes of the photodiode die macrocell. Each supercell has a differential amplifier configurable to receive a noninverting input from a photodiode and an inverting input, the differential amplifier providing an output, each differential amplifier has an amplifier reset transistor coupled to the differential amplifier output and the inverting input; a first capacitor coupled between the differential amplifier output and the inverting input, and a second capacitor coupled between the inverting input and a signal ground. The first and second capacitor of embodiments has controllable capacitance to adjust gain.

An image sensor that includes a pixel array with image pixels with conditional reset circuitry. The pixels can be reset by a combination of row select and column reset signals, which implements the reset function while minimizing the number of extra signal lines. The pixels may also include pinned photodiodes. The manner in which the pinned photodiodes are used reduces noise and allows the quantization of the pixel circuits to be programmable.

Pixel structure and reset scheme

Methods and systems for increasing the effective dynamic range of an image sensor are disclosed. Each pixel in the sensor is exposed for a respective first exposure time. Each pixel's response to the respective first exposure is measured and compared to threshold values. Based on the pixel's response to the respective first exposure time, an optimal exposure is calculated for each pixel. The optimal exposure time is applied to each pixel by utilizing row-enabled and column-enabled signals at each pixel within the sensor.

Increasing dynamic range using multisampling

Described is a multi-modal binary pixel sampling system incorporating a configurable sampler. The system includes an imaging pixel that outputs a series of reset and measurement values. The configurable sampler can extract image data from these values using correlated double sampling (CDS), non-correlated double sampling (NCDS), direct comparison sampling (DS), or a combination of these sampling modes. The configurable sampler is agile and may transition among modes during an exposure interval. Additional switches, storage elements, and reference nodes may be added to store additional measurements or calibration values.

Methods and circuitries for pixel sampling

An analog multiplexer is configured to multiplex a plurality of input analog signal channels into a single output analog signal channel. The analog multiplexer comprises a plurality of input sampling circuits associated with respective ones of the input analog signal channels and an amplifier having an input controllably connectable in turn to each of the input sampling circuits. The analog multiplexer is further configured to connect at least a given one of the input analog signal channels to a sampling element of its corresponding input sampling circuit at a predetermined time prior to connecting the sampling element of that input sampling circuit to the input of the amplifier. The predetermined time is less than a full clock cycle of a sampling clock of the amplifier. The analog multiplexer may be implemented in readout circuitry coupled to a pixel array in an image sensor.
