A transceiver includes a transmitter and a receiver. The transmitter includes a precoder stage, an encoder stage and a first converter stage. The precoder stage receives an input binary signal and a previously processed binary signal. The encoder stage is electrically coupled to the precoder stage and the first converter stage and includes a feed forward equalizer (FFE). The first converter stage generates a modulated signal. The receiver includes a second converter stage, an amplifier stage, a first equalizer stage and a second equalizer stage. The second converter stage receives the modulated signal. The first equalizer stage is electrically coupled to the amplifier stage. The second equalizer stage is electrically coupled to the first equalizer stage. The second equalizer stage includes a decision feedback equalizer (DFE) that converts the modulated signal into an output binary signal.

Optical transmission for binary and duobinary modulation formats

An electrical return to zero (RZ) encoder converts non-return to zero (NRZ) data, into of RZ data patterns with a flexibility for duty cycle adjustment so that any RZ data pattern may be provided for a specific application's need. A duty cycle of&#x3e;50% or&#x3c;50% may be achieved by selecting between a clock signal or its complement and adjusting its delay.

Electrical generation of return-to-zero (RZ) data pattern with flexible duty cycle adjustment for optical transmission

An optical to electrical converter is to receive an incoming optical data communications signal. A binary to ternary encoder has an input coupled to an output of the converter. A ternary to binary decoder has first and second limiting amplifiers, each having a pair of complementary inputs. One of the inputs of each pair is coupled to a first adjustable threshold circuit and the other is coupled to an output of the encoder. A logical summing circuit has a pair of inputs coupled to outputs of the first and second limiting amplifiers, respectively. Other embodiments are also described and claimed.

Optical receiver with electric ternary coding

An optoelectronic circuit has an optical to electrical converter, a duo-binary encoder with an input coupled to an output of the converter, and a duo-binary decoder having an input coupled to the output of the encoder. A decision circuit having an input coupled to an output of the decoder is also provided. Other embodiments are also described and claimed.

Optical receiver with duo-binary encoder

An apparatus for optical receiver circuit protection includes a bias source, a bias monitor, and a comparator. The bias source is to provide a bias voltage to an optical receiver. The bias monitor is coupled to measure a current through the optical receiver, where the current changes responsive to received optical energy. A comparator is coupled to the bias monitor, where the comparator has a first state if the current is less than a threshold current level and where the comparator has a second state if the current is greater than the threshold current level. The bias source is coupled to be enabled responsive to the comparator switching to the first state and disabled responsive to the comparator switching to the second state.

Optical receiver protection circuit

An apparatus comprising a control system coupled to an optical modulator. The control system including an Radio Frequency (RF)/dither ratio unit coupled to the optical modulator, wherein the RF/dither ratio unit to modify an amplitude of a dither signal inputted into the optical modulator to maintain a constant ratio between the amplitude of the dither signal and an amplitude of an RF input signal inputted into the optical modulator.
