Embodiments of the present disclosure are directed to microendoscope instruments and methods that allows the imaging fiber to freely rotate with the animal while capturing images and projecting stimulation patterns with correct orientations. The microendoscope includes a first spatial light modulator for sourcing a first light source and generating a stimulated pattern to a fiber coupled to an imaging implant for attaching to the brain of the subject. A rotary joint is disposed between the microendoscope and the imaging implant to facilitate the movements and rotations of the imaging implant that is attached to the subject, thereby provides an essentially frictionless contact to brain of the subject so that the subject can freely moves and rotates without feeling the cumbersome imaging implant and fiber that are attached to the subject. A camera captures images obtained from the imaging implant with the specimen taken from the subject.

Systems and methods of rotation compensation for brain optical imaging and stimulation

Embodiments of the present disclosure are directed to optical instruments and methods with a head mounted camera on a subject to provide a compact and lightweight solution to imaging specimen from the brain of a subject thereby providing closer proximity imaging with minimal or negligible effect to the subject's ability to physically move and rotate freely. The head mounted camera includes a light source for illuminating light through a beamsplitter to an image lens implant, which has been surgically inserted in the brain of the subject. The head mounted camera also includes an image sensor for imaging the top surface of the imaging lens implant and for capturing and transmitting images of neurons from deep inside the brain of the subject to the image sensor.

Systems and methods of a head mounted camera with fiber bundle for optical stimulation

The present disclosure is directed to instruments and methods that provide one or more stimulations with multiple fibers and multiple imaging implants inserted in a subject for capturing images from one or more regions of the subject's brain. The microendoscope can include a single spatial light modulator or multiple spatial light modulators, a furcated imaging fiber bundle with multiple fibers, multi-implants coupled to a subject for multi-implant patterned brain imaging and stimulation. Both the single spatial light modulator and multiple spatial light modulators are capable to project optical patterns to different imaging fibers and thereby stimulate multiple regions of the brain.

Systems and methods of multi-implant patterned brain imaging and stimulation

Embodiments of the present disclosure are directed to optical instruments and methods for enhancing high-contrast spatial light modulation with cascaded spatial light modulators where a first spatial light modulator displays a first spatial pattern that subsequent cascaded one or more spatial light modulators would calibrate and align with the first spatial pattern, thereby increasing the device contrast ratio of the output pattern displayed by the cascaded spatial light modulators. A relay optics is positioned somewhere between two spatial light modulators for imaging a spatial pattern from one spatial light modulator to another spatial light modulator. In addition, a light source generating an illumination to the first spatial light modulator. A projection lens receives the output pattern from an output of the cascaded spatial light modulators and imaged the output pattern to a required distance at a required magnification by a projection lens.

Systems and methods for high-contrast spatial light modulation

A method for driving an optical device for optical stimulation. In step (1) upon loading a first image pattern associated with light of a first wavelength into an SLM, the SLM is illuminated with light of the first wavelength for a first time period while the light of the second wavelength is off. In step (2) upon loading a second image pattern associated with light of a second wavelength into the SLM, the SLM is illuminated with light of the second wavelength for a second time period while the light of the first wavelength is off. The steps (1) and (2) are iteratively repeated, in that order, until a predetermined stimulation duration is attained. The first time period and the second time period are both shorter than a response time of a specimen (e.g., neuron(s)) that is being optically stimulated.

Multi-wavelength interleaved optical stimulation

A system and method for providing a fiber array light source with individually controlled multiple-wavelength outputs are disclosed. A single spatial light modulator (SLM) outputs an image light of a first wavelength and an image light of a second wavelength. An overlap image is produced based on the image light of the first and second wavelengths. A fiber array receives light associated with the overlap image so that each individual optical fiber in the fiber array corresponds to multiple pixels on the SLM.

A system and method for multiplexing multiple images of different colors using only a single spatial light modulator (SLM) are disclosed. In the disclosed system, a first dichroic beam splitter receives an image light of first and second wavelengths from the SLM, and reflects the image light of the first wavelength towards a first mirror and an image light of the second wavelength towards a second mirror. The first mirror reflects the image light of the first wavelength at a first angle, and the second mirror reflects the image light of the second wavelength at a second angle. Further, the system includes a second dichroic beam splitter that receives the image light of the first wavelength from the first mirror and the image light of the second wavelength from the second mirror, and recombines the image light of the first and second wavelengths to produce an overlap image.

A system for a re-configurable optical de-multiplexer, multiplexer or add/drop multiplexer is provided. A re-configurable de-multiplexer system comprises a wavelength selective switch having an input port, an output port and an internal port; a wavelength division de-multiplexer (WDM) optically coupled to the internal port and a plurality of dropped-channel ports optically coupled to the WDM. The wavelength selective switch receives a plurality of input wavelength-division multiplexed channels from the input port and routes a first subset of the channels to the output port and a second subset of channels to the internal port and then to the WDM. The WDM separates each of the dropped channels to a different respective one of the channel ports.

Broadband light source systems, devices, and methods with a tunable spectrum are described by multiplexing a plurality of light sources, such as LEDs, with thin-film filters or diffraction gratings. A plurality of light sources with different or same wavelengths are multiplexed together to construct a combined broadband light source. A diffraction grating diffracts light beams from the plurality of light sources to a slit-shaped aperture, depending on selected light sources, the relative positions of the light sources to the slit-shaped aperture, and the type of grating to produce a tunable spectrum.

An improved optical switch utilizes one polarization modulator, with the beam components traversing it twice. Because of the twice traverse, the extinction ratio of the switch is doubled without the addition of another polarization modulator, thus avoiding the costs of additional optical components. With no additional components, the switch is more compact than conventional switches with the same extinction ratio. Fewer components also result in more thermal and long-term stability and less crosstalk.

A tunable optical filter comprises an optical switch having a single first optical port and a plurality of second optical ports; a plurality of band pass filters, each one of the band pass filters optically coupled to a respective second optical port; and an optical multiplexer having a plurality of inputs and a single output, each input optically coupled to a respective band pass filter, wherein the optical switch delivers a plurality of optical channels to a selected one of the band pass filters, the selected band pass filter transmitting a single selected optical channel to an input of the optical multiplexer. A dynamic equalizing optical channel router includes an input port for receiving a wavelength division multiplexed composite optical signal comprising a plurality of channels; at least one output port; a diffraction grating optically coupled to the input and output ports; a lens optically coupled to the diffraction grating at a side opposite to the input and output ports; an array of steering devices optically coupled to the lens at a side opposite to the diffraction grating, wherein each channel is reflected by a different steering device of the array; and a plurality of attenuators, wherein each channel reflected by the array traverses one of the attenuators and the diffraction grating to the at least one output port. The router is able to dynamically adjust optical intensity of each wavelength channel by a different amount while also performing the function of wavelength routing.
