The aspects of embodiments of the invention relate to advanced bioelectrochemical systems. More specifically, the invention relates to the utilization of a power source such as, but not limited to, photo-active, semiconducting materials, batteries, or the like integrated with bioelectrochemical systems perhaps to increase oxidation and/or reduction reactions, which can be applied to the treatment of pollutants environmental media such as but not limited to water, wastewater, soil, and other water-containing environment.

Method for advanced bioelectrochemical treatment of pollutants

The present invention provides photo-cleavable anionic surfactants, particularly 4-hexylphenylazosulfonate (Azo) and sodium 4-hexylphenylazosulfonate derivatives, which can be rapidly degraded upon UV irradiation, for top-down and bottom-up proteomics. These surfactants can effectively solubilize proteins and peptide fragments with performance comparable to sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and are compatible with mass spectrometry analysis of the solubilized proteins and peptide fragments. Top-down proteomic studies using the present photo-cleavable anionic surfactants has allowed the detection of 100-fold more unique proteoforms as compared to controls and has enabled the solubilization of membrane proteins for comprehensive characterization of protein post-translational modifications. In addition, the present photo-cleavable anionic surfactants are also suitable for dissolving polypeptides in bottom-up proteomic experiments including extracellular matrix proteomics, and are suitable as a substitute for SDS in gel electrophoresis.

Photo-cleavable surfactants

Exosomes are a small type of extracellular vesicles containing nucleic acids, lipids, and proteins that are implicated in tumorigenesis, metastasis, and cardiac regeneration, and therefore serve as potentially useful biomarkers from fluids or as vehicles for drug delivery. Global bottom-up mass spectrometry-based proteomics has been previously used to profile exosome cargo for diagnostic purposes. However, the current protocols for MS analysis of extracellular vesicles and exosome proteomics are challenging due to labor-intensive sample preparation, including lengthy digestion times and removal of MS incompatible reagents, and the need for high sensitivity. To address these challenges, the present invention provides a novel, high-throughput strategy for extracellular vesicle analysis and exosome proteomics using a photo-cleavable, anionic surfactant, preferably 4-hexylphenylazosulfonate (Azo). These photo-cleavable, anionic surfactants are able to facilitate high-throughput digestion with minimal sample cleanup for quantitative and highly reproducible analysis.

Strategy enabled by a photo-cleavable surfactant for extracellular vesicle proteomics

Embodiments of the present invention may provide managing waste including providing non-sorted solid waste (), processing non-sorted solid waste in a waste handling system (), shredding () non-sorted solid waste to create shredded non-sorted solid waste () in a waste handling system; introducing shredded non-sorted solid waste into a thermochemical conversion reactor (); heating and even chemically converting a shredded non-sorted solid waste; producing hydrochar () and a recyclable materials fraction (); recycling water () used in the heating and chemically processing of the shredded non-sorted solid waste in a thermochemical conversion reactor in said waste handling system; sorting () the recyclable materials fraction; fueling () a thermochemical conversion reactor with hydrochar (); and perhaps even recycling heat from a thermochemical conversion reactor in the waste handling system.

Systems and methods for conversion of unsorted solid wastes

Embodiments of the present invention may provide methods and systems for enhancing bioreactivity of carbonaceous geological material () which may include adding carbonaceous geological material to an electrochemical treatment () and creating acidic and basic pH levels, peroxides, and radicals () which can increase biochemical reactivity, bioavailability, and water solubility of the carbonaceous geological material to provide a reactive carbonaceous geological material ().

Methods and systems for electrochemically increasing bioreactivity of carbonaceous geological materials

Electrodes for catalyzing electrochemical reactions (e.g., the hydrogen evolution reaction) are provided. The electrode may comprise a ternary pyrite-phase transition metal phosphochalcogenide (e.g., CoPS) disposed on a substrate, wherein the ternary pyrite-phase transition metal phosphochalcogenide is a solid material of a ternary compound of a transition metal, phosphorous (P), and a chalcogen, the solid material characterized by a substantially single, ternary alloy phase having a pyrite crystal structure. Methods of using and making the electrodes are also provided.

High performance earth-abundant electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction and other reactions

Embodiments of the present invention provide a portable bioelectrochemical electrical signal measuring device that may have at least one anode, at least one cathode, an anode-cathode connector between said at least one anode and said at least one cathode, a load connector between a load and said at least one anode and at least one cathode, and a data meter connected to said load connector wherein the device may measure an electrical signal of a matrix to perhaps determine the microbial activity in the matrix.

Methods and systems for real-time monitoring of in situ bioactivity and biodegradation

Graphene oxide (GO) is an emerging material for energy, environmental, and many other applications which in the past has been produced using chemical processes involving high-energy consumption and hazardous chemicals. Embodiments of the present invention focus on bioelectrochemical systems (BES) having microorganism(s), an anode () and cathode () to produce GO () from graphite, coal, and other carbonaceous materials under ambient conditions without chemical amendments. In some embodiments, value-added organic compounds () and even H() can be produced.

Bioelectrochemical methods and systems for efficient production of graphene oxide and hydrogen

Methods and systems to achieve clean fuel processing systems in which carbon dioxide emissions () from sources () may be processed in at least one processing reactor () containing a plurality of chemoautotrophic bacteria () which can convert the carbon dioxide emissions into biomass () which may then be used for various products () such as biofuels, fertilizer, feedstock, or the like. Sulfate reducing bacteria () may be used to supply sulfur containing compounds to the chemoautotrophic bacteria ().

Systems and methods for biological conversion of carbon dioxide pollutants into useful products

A bioelectrochemical system device may be used to enhance groundwater pollutant chemical removal or degradation. Such a bioelectrochemical system may be inserted into the environment to be remediated through a variety of techniques, such as through insertion into wells or other access points, trench insertion, direct insertion, borehole insertion, or combinations thereof. In some aspects, the bioelectrochemical system device may have a hollow-tube configuration with an outer ring anode and inner ring cathode. In further aspects, the bioelectrochemical system device may have a modular form that can be combined with multiple other modules such one or more bioelectrochemical system devices.

Bioelectrochemical devices for enhanced in situ bioremediation

The use of coal fields as subsurface bioreactors for producing sustainable methane gas from terrestrial sources of biomass is described. Microbial presence is determined for a target coal formation, and tracers are injected to determine permeability, porosity, volume, and minimum and a maximum material injection rates. At least one injection well and at least one circulation well effective for generating an injection rate between the minimum and maximum injection rates are provided for injecting a solution of biodegradable materials into the coal seam. A chosen quantity of biodegradable materials is allowed to be digested, fermented and converted by microbial action within the coal seam. Methane gas is extracted through producing and injecting wells, although pumping will enhance gas recovery.

A method for growing single-crystal perovskite structures comprises immersing a film of a metal precursor compound on a surface of a substrate, the metal precursor compound comprising a metal ion B, in a solution comprising a cation precursor compound, the cation precursor compound comprising a cation ion A and an anion X, at a concentration of the cation precursor compound, a growth time, and a growth temperature sufficient to dissolve the film to release the metal ion B to form a complex with the anion X and sufficient to induce recrystallization of the complex with the cation ion A to form a plurality of single-crystal perovskite structures composed of A, B and X. Biological reduction of carbon dioxide pollutants systems and methods

A method for using a bioelectrochemical system for the remediation of contaminated substrates is disclosed. The system is partially submerged into the contaminated substrates and stimulates electron transfer by microbial species in order to degrade contaminating hydrocarbons in the substrate, including vadose zone substrates. A method for the generation of electricity using bioelectrochemical reaction in contaminated substrates is also disclosed.
