Disclosed herein is an implantable capsule expander device for insertion within a lens capsule of an eye of a patient. The device comprises an arcuate center portion including first and second rims and having a first height, an outermost peripheral portion including a second height that is less than the first height, and a receiving portion formed between the first and second rims. The center portion and the outermost peripheral portion are configured to stabilize the capsule expander device within the lens capsule and to expand the lens capsule. The receiving portion is sized to receive an artificial intraocular lens.

A curvature changing accommodative intraocular lens for implantation into the eye of a patient includes a lens body having a base lens which has a base lens power, and a haptic structure including haptic elements projecting from the base lens. An actuator is placed into engagement with the lens body, and includes actuator haptic elements. At least one fluidic optical element is received between the actuator and base lens of the lens body and contains a fluid material therein. During accommodation of the patient's eye, the haptic elements of the lens body and actuator are engaged and apply a force to the fluidic optical element, causing the fluidic optical element to be deformed to generate an additional lens power to adjust the patient's vision.

Curvature changing accommodative intraocular lens

An accommodating intraocular lens (AIOL) includes an optic adapted to produce a trapezoidal phase shift and a plurality of haptics. Each haptic extends from a haptic-optic junction to at least one transverse arm contacting a capsular bag of the eye, and each haptic has sufficient length and rigidity to stretch a capsular bag of the eye to contact ciliary muscles of the eye. The haptic-optic junctions vault the optic forward relative to the haptics and compression of the haptics by the ciliary muscles moves the anterior optic forward. A combined accommodative power produced by the motion of the anterior optic and the trapezoidal phase shift is at least 0.5 Diopters.

A two or three component lens system. The first component is a ring-like supporting component that is implanted in the capsular bag following cataract surgery. The first component is a non-optical component and does not correct for any refractive errors. The first component may contains features to help reduce or eliminate PCO. The second component is an optical component that may contain all of the corrective optical power of the lens system. The second component has a pair of tabs for locking the second component within the first component. The third component is optional and is similar to second component and contains some optical power to correct for any residual optical error not corrected by the second component. The second and third components may also be implanted so as to move relative to one another, thereby providing some accommodation.

A two-optic accommodative lens system. The first lens has a negative power and is located posteriorly within the capsular bag and laying against the posterior capsule. The periphery of the first optic contains a pair of generally T-shaped haptics having a generally rectangular slot within the top portion of the &ldquo;T&rdquo;. The second optic is located anteriorly to the first optic outside of the capsular bag and is of a positive power. The peripheral edge of the second optic contains a pair of encircling haptics having a notched tab sized and shape to fit within the slots in the haptics on the first optic to lock the second optic onto the first optic. Hinge structures on the encircling haptics allow the second optic to move relative to the first optic along the optical axis of the lens system in reaction to movement of the ciliary muscle.

Accommodative intraocular lens

An anterior chamber phakic lens made from an elastomeric, foldable, highly biocompatible material. The lens has a generally circular optic and integrally formed plate-style haptics, the haptics containing an opening into which project a pair of pincer arms. the pincer arms are sized and shaped so as to pull away from each other when the lens is folded, and are draw back toward each other when the folded lens is released and allowed to return to its unfolded state. Such movement allows the pincers to gather a small section of the iris so as to hold the lens in place.

Anterior chamber phakic lens

An anterior chamber phakic lens made from an elastomeric, foldable, highly biocompatible material. The lens has a generally circular optic and integrally formed plate-style haptics, the haptics containing an opening into which project a pair of pincer arms. The pincer arms are sized and shaped so as to pull away from each other when the lens is folded, and are draw back toward each other when the folded lens is released and allowed to return to its unfolded state. Such movement allows the pincers to gather a small section of the iris so as to hold the lens in place.
