The present invention relates to a protection switching method and system for a Multi-Rooted Point-to-Multi-point Service in a Provider Backbone Bridge (PBB) network. In one embodiment, this is accomplished by assigning at least one communication device as Root node, a plurality of intermediate nodes and Leaf nodes, receiving, on at least one of the edge nodes (i.e. Root or leaf), the data packets from a client network interfacing with the PBB network, configuring all the communication edge devices to create a MAC-in-MAC data packet from the received data packet, configuring the Root node to add ISID R and leaf nodes to add ISID L in the I-tag of MAC-in-MAC data packets, determining a fault, if integrity check messages are not received in a predetermined time period between the Root node and the Leaf Nodes and switching the traffic by changing the designated backbone destination MAC address of the MAC-in-MAC data packets from the present root node MAC address to other available superior root node MAC address; wherein switching is performed when integrity failure is detected, or upon network operator request.

Protection switching method and system for a multi-rooted point-to-multi-point service in a provider backbone bridge (PBB) network

The present invention relates to a protection switching method in a communication network, the communication network including plurality of communication devices forming a linear chain and at least one non-ERPS on the nodes ERPS (Ethernet Ring Protection Switching) device connecting terminal ports of the linear chain and thereby forming a ring. In one embodiment this is accomplished by instantiating ERPS on each communication device that forms a linear chain and on each non-terminal ports of the linear chain, identifying a node or link fault in the network, wherein the link or node fault is detected by Continuity Check Message (CCM), Loss of Light (LOL), Loss of Signal (LOS), Loss of periodic continuity check messages (IEEE 802.1 ag) or any other mechanisms thereof, blocking ports of the communication device in response to the detection of fault, periodically broadcasting a fault message by the blocked ports of the communication devices, wherein the message gets terminated at the ports of the communication device within the linear chain network without reaching the non-ERPS device, flushing the Media Access Control (MAC) table entry upon receipt of the fault message by all the communication device and unblocking of a root port link (RPL) of the linear for providing an alternate path to route network traffic after receipt of the fault message.

Ethernet chain protection switching

The present invention relates to a protection switching for use in a communication network, and more particularly, to a method and a system for protection switching provision by a distributed or extended protection group in a communication network. In one embodiment, this can be accomplished by defining a traffic bit (t-bit) on all the communication devices in the network, assigning at least one communication device as master node and other devices as slave node, determining a fault if continuity check message is not received in a predetermined time period between the master node and the traffic source, carrying of status information, reliably, between communication devices using existing protection or restoration methods, broadcasting by setting the bit 't'=1 (or 't'=0) by the master node to all other slave nodes thereby notifying about the fault (or clearance of fault) towards traffic source and receiving the traffic from the traffic source by the other available slave nodes when master node's link towards traffic source fails.
