A bactericidal insert for introduction into a canal in a tooth during a root canal procedure is provided, along with a method of producing the insert and a method of using the insert in a root canal procedure. The insert is in the form of a carrier having a plurality of pores or interstices. The carrier had been impregnated with a liquid photosensitive dye so that the dye entered the pores or interstices and then the carrier with the liquid photosensitive dye forms a dye-impregnated carrier. The dye-impregnated carrier is configured and adapted for insertion within the canal of the tooth. The carrier, if dried, is adapted to receive a wetting agent to dissolve the dye therein to produce a liquefied dye, which is activatable to produce singlet oxygen within the canal when it is irradiated by light from outside of the tooth.

A method for the formation of flexible surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy substrates with filtering capabilities. The method produces thin flexible substrates that have a nanoparticle ink deposited thereon. The nanoparticle ink may be any suitable nanoparticle ink which includes stabilized nanoparticles such as silver, gold or copper nanoparticles. The substrates and nanoparticle ink undergo a thermal treatment for an amount of time sufficient to remove liquid vehicle and a substantial portion of the stabilizer. The thermal treatment provides a fractal aggregate nanoparticle layer on the substrate suitable for Raman spectroscopy. Such flexible SERS substrates may be used to detect trace amounts of analyte in large volume samples.

Flexible SERS substrates with filtering capabilities

A method for the formation of surface enhanced Raman scattering substrates. The method produces thin substrates that have a nanoparticle ink deposited thereon. The nanoparticle ink may be any suitable nanoparticle ink such as silver, gold or copper nanoparticle ink which includes stabilized nanoparticles. The substrates and nanoparticle ink undergo a first step of heating in order to remove liquid vehicle from the ink The substrates and nanoparticles then undergo a second step of heating for an amount of time sufficient to remove a substantial portion of the stabilizer and provide a fractal aggregate nanoparticle layer on the substrate having a certain resistivity or conductivity suitable for Raman scattering. This creates SERS substrates with enhanced amplification properties.

A method for the formation of surface enhanced Raman scattering substrates. The method produces thin substrates that have a nanoparticle ink deposited thereon. The nanoparticle ink may be any suitable nanoparticle ink such as silver, gold or copper nanoparticle ink which includes stabilized nanoparticles. The substrates and nanoparticle ink undergo a first step of heating in order to remove liquid vehicle from the ink. The substrates and nanoparticles then undergo a second step of heating for an amount of time sufficient to remove a substantial portion of the stabilizer and provide a fractal aggregate nanoparticle layer on the substrate having a certain resistivity or conductivity suitable for Raman scattering. This creates SERS substrates with enhanced amplification properties.

Method for the formation of SERS substrates

At least a part of a first coherent beam of monochromatic light is incident bliquely on the reflecting surface of a mirror to produce a reflected beam in a direction different from that of the first beam. An interference pattern is produced within a volume defined by the intersection of the reflected beam with the first beam. A part of an optical fiber is positioned in the volume containing the interference pattern, and a grating is photo-induced in the optical fiber by exposure of the optical fiber to the interference pattern. A desired Bragg period in the grating can be selected by tilting the mirror to change the interference pattern.

Apparatus and process for making fiber optic bragg gratings

Ferromagnetic porphin compounds may be produced by heating a non-ferromagnetic porphin compound having a central transition metal atom in the non-ferromagnetic porphin molecule and at least some of the pyrrole rings of the non-ferromagnetic porphin molecule having benzene or phenyl groups substituted on or integral with said rings. The non-ferromagnetic porphin compound is heated in the substantial absence of oxygen to a temperature sufficient to pyrolyze at least a portion of the benzene or phenyl groups of the non-ferromagnetic porphin compound. A ferromagnetic porphin compound is formed, which is inherently magnetic and is capable of retaining magnetism when exposed to a magnetic field. The resulting ferromagnetic porphin compounds retain their ferromagnetic properties even up to about 473.degree. K. in air and to much higher temperatures in vacuum or an inert atmosphere.
