A biocompatible controlled release form of complexed iodine is achieved by a complexation of polyvinyl alcohol based foam and characterized by a residual starch component to optimize iodine release profiles. The resulting iodine complexed polyvinyl alcohol foam may be utilized locally as an antimicrobial agent that releases controlled amounts of iodine sufficient to kill microbes for extended durations without excessive bulk and rigidity.

Composition and methods for antimicrobial articles

A sustained and controlled release form of iodine is achieved by a complex of polyvinyl alcohol starch and iodine, characterized by the PVA based coating being insoluble in boiling water. The polyvinyl alcohol is in the form of a coating reacted with varying types of non-mineral acid containing catalysts/curing or insolubilizing agents deposited on cellulose sponge or other substrates and subsequently complexed with iodine. These cost effective sponges or wipers are topically applied as a solid state antimicrobial device, which releases controlled amounts of iodine on contact sufficient to kill germ cells, and leaves minimal residue.

Polymeric broad spectrum antimicrobial coatings

A molded porous polyvinyl alcohol sponge includes an outer skin capable of absorbing and passing water to interior portions of the sponge, and is substantially smooth except for predetermined structural details imparted by the mold used in its making. The outer skin has smaller average pore size than does the interior portion of the product.

A fishing lure is described which is wholly or in part comprised of hydroxylated polyvinyl acetal sponge. The sponge may include a fish attractant. The lure looks and may smell like natural bait, and achieves a desired more natural action of a lure with a much longer lived attractant functionality.

A sustained and controlled release form of iodine is achieved by a complex of polyvinyl alcohol and the iodine characterized by a low water solubility. The polyvinyl alcohol may be reacted to form hydroxylated polyvinyl acetal sponge and the sponge is topically applied as an antimicrobial agent which releases controlled amounts of iodine sufficient to kill germ cells with minimal toxicity to surrounding tissue.

A membrane of a porous unexpanded polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), such as that made by the matrix technique disclosed in U.S. Pat. No. 3,497,256, issued Feb. 24, 1970, in sheet form is sandwiched between metal foil layers that are stiff enough to take a dead set crimp; the three layer composite is passed through corrugating gears; the corrugated composite is indexed between two grooved plates under moderate pressure and the composite is heated while between the plates to heat set the plastic membrane; then the metal foil layers are removed after cooling.

Method for shaping a plastic membrane

A uniformly expandable hydrophilic sponge, adapted for medical usage, characterized by instantaneous wicking and a high liquid holding capacity comprising a reaction product of polyvinyl alcohol and formaldehyde. The wicking and liquid holding capacity is attained by controlling the time, temperature and processing conditions while forming and curing the reaction product in an aqueous medium. The sponge is rendered uniformly expandable by drying the wet sponge while maintaining the shape of the wet sponge. The sponge can be made X-ray opaque by incorporating, homogeneously, throughout an encapsulated radiopaque substance with the formaldehyde and polyvinyl alcohol. The sponge is biocompatible, non-toxic, lint free, compressible, resilient, strong, non-abrasive, free of foreign leachable materials and is of exceptionally high fluid holding capacity.
