A method and an unmanned aerial vehicle for identifying and remediating a gas leak. The method includes flying the unmanned aerial vehicle towards a possible location of the gas leak, then detecting a first condition indicative of the gas leak with a first sensor and sensing environmental conditions near the gas leak with an environmental sensor. The method includes receiving, by a controller, a signal representing the first condition indicative of the gas leak and a signal representing the environmental conditions. The method includes determining, based on the first condition indicative of the gas leak and the environmental conditions near the gas leak, a flight plan including an ignition zone. The method includes positioning, based on the flight plan, the unmanned aerial vehicle relative to the ignition zone and discharging, by an ignition mechanism, an ignition source into the gas leak to ignite the gas leak.

Identifying and remediating a gas leak

The present disclosure describes a system that includes: an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) comprising one or more on-board batteries, and a self-powering payload coupled to the UAV, wherein the self-powering payload comprises: one or more transformable devices configured to alter an orientation of the one or more transformable devices with respect to a transmission line in proximity to the UAV when the UAV is air-borne; one or more coil devices mounted on the one or more transformable devices and configured to capture a magnetic flux of an electromagnetic field generated by the transmission line; and an electric circuit configured to generate, based on the captured magnetic flux, charging currents for the one or more on-board batteries on the UAV while the UAV is in air-borne.

Self-powered unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)

An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) system energized by power lines includes a UAV, a charging mechanism and an electric circuit. The charging mechanism is operatively coupled to a body of the UAV. The charging mechanism can connect to power transmission lines deployed near an air space in which the UAV is airborne and operating. The charging mechanism can draw power from the power transmission lines to power a flight of the UAV. The electric circuit is onboard the UAV. The electric circuit can generate charging currents based on the power drawn from the power transmission lines to power the flight of the UAV while the UAV is airborne.

Systems, methods, and apparatuses for protecting daisy chain networks from node malfunction or power outage are disclosed. One or more communication nodes in a daisy chain network can be bypass-capable communication nodes. Bypass-capable communication nodes can include a sensing and switching subsystem, embedded in the node or external to the node in a fiber optic cable running along the daisy chain network. In embodiments, the sensing and switching subsystem can responsively switch the bypass-capable communication node from communication node primary circuitry to primary circuitry responsive to node malfunction or node power outage. The sensing and switching subsystem also can switch back from bypass circuitry to primary circuitry responsive to restoration of node function or node power. In embodiments, switching occurs responsive to excitation or de-excitation of the node itself.

System, method, and apparatus for daisy chain network protection from node malfunction or power outage

In some examples of monitoring pipeline integrity using fiber optics, a first set of values that represent an attenuation of a light signal transmitted through an optical fiber positioned adjacent a pipeline to carry fluids and a second set of values that represent a dispersion of the light signal transmitted through the optical fiber are received. An attenuation profile of the light signal and a dispersion profile of the light signal through the optical fiber are generated based on the first and second sets of values, respectively. Using the profiles, a light-based profile signature describing an environment surrounding the optical fiber is generated, and compared with a baseline light-based profile signature describing an environment surrounding the optical fiber under a normal operating condition. A notification describing an operation of the pipeline is provided in response to the comparing.

Embodiments of computer program products and computer implemented methods also are provided to detect a time of communication failure and a time of a corresponding recovery between a node and either a remote subsystem or a remote host.
