.beta.-lactams of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 signifies hydrogen or a group readily cleavable by hydrolysis, A signifies the group R.sup.2 --N.dbd.C(CH.sub.3)--CH.dbd.C&lt; or O.dbd.C(CH.sub.3)--CH.sub.2 --C(R.sup.3)&lt;, R.sup.2 signifies hydroxy, lower alkoxy or arylamino and R.sup.3 signifies arylthio, lower alkanoylthio, lower alkoxycarbonylhydrazino or a N-containing saturated heterocycle attached via a N-atom, and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof, are disclosed. The compounds and their salts exhibit .beta.-lactamase inhibiting activities against .beta.-lactamases from bacteria.

Penicillanic acid derivatives

A process for the preparation of mefloquin and its physiologically compatible acid addition salts by reacting 6-phthalimido-1-hexene with a 4-halo-2,8-bis-(trifluoromethyl)-quinoline in the presence of a base, epoxidizing the resulting N-[6-&lt;2,8-bis-(trifluoromethyl)-4-quinolyl&gt;-5-hexenyl]-phthalimide to give N-[4-{3-&lt;2,8-bis-(trifluoromethyl)-4-quinolyl&gt;-2-oxiranyl}-butyl]-phthalim ide, treating the latter with hydrazine hydrate and, where applicable, converting the product into an acid addition salt as well as intermediates obtained in this process.

Intermediates for mefloquin

There are presented .beta.-lactams of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 is cyano or a group of the formula R.sup.4 --CO-- or R.sup.5 --A--CO--, R.sup.2 is hydrogen, lower alkyl or halogen, R.sup.3 is hydrogen or a group readily cleavable by hydrolysis, n is the number 0, 1 or 2, R.sup.4 is hydrogen, hydroxy, lower alkoxy, lower alkyl, aryl or a group of the formula ##STR2## R.sup.5 is halogen, lower alkoxy, lower alkylthio, lower alkylsulphinyl, lower alkylsulphonyl, aryl, aryloxy, arylthio, arylsulphinyl, arylsulphonyl or di-(loweralkoxy)phoshinyl, R.sup.6 and R.sup.7 are lower alkyl and A is lower alkylene, and pharmaceutically acceptable salts of carboxylic acids of formula I with bases. The compounds exhibit pronounced .beta.-lactamase-inhibiting properties.
