Coating compositions are disclosed having very fine mica with particle sizes ranging from 0.1 to 15 microns which produce added color to the coating without producing a metallic effect or color travel.

Non-metallic coating compositions containing very fine mica

Acrylic coating compositions containing silver metallic flake pigments are disclosed. The coatings are particularly adapted for use in automotive top coat systems as the base coat of a pigmented base coat/clear top coat coating system. The coating compositions have a hydroxyl content of less than about 8.0 wt. %. The resulting coating compositions when dried or cured to hard durable films do not exhibit discoloration associated with silver flake coatings.

Novel opalescent coatings are disclosed containing foamed metal oxides. The foamed metal oxides impart a unique opalescence to the coatings, result in more natural hues, softer colors and minimal color travel.

Decorative, highly reflective, adherent coatings suitable for automotive finishes comprise a base coat layer and a top coat layer. The base coat layer comprises a film-forming agent, leafing aluminum flake and, optionally, one or more colored pigmenting agents. The top coat layer comprises a transparent film-forming agent and an acidic adhesion promoting agent effective to inhibit delamination of the coating system. Optionally an alkylamine/fatty ester stabilizing agent is added to the base coat composition to stabilize the composition against deleafing during storage.

Reflective automotive coating compositions

Automotive coating compositions are disclosed. The compositions comprise a metallic or a metallic-like pigment and a metal oxide pigment, wherein the metal oxide pigment has a particle size of about 20 nm to about 30 nm. The coating compositions exhibit high chromaticity with excellent downflop. The coating compositions also have an opalescent appearance.

Opalescent automotive paint compositions containing microtitanium

A unique opalescent color effect is produced on a substrate material utilizing a multicoat coating system. The primer base coat is a nonmetallic primary color coat having an N-4 to N-8 value on the Munsell color chart. Directly on top of the primer base coat there is applied a transparent interference coat containing a polymeric binder and metal oxide encapsulated mica particles in a pigment to binder ratio of 0.06 to 0.13. On top of the previously applied coats is applied a transparent protective clear coat, the primary base color coat being a high solids content primer layer having good corrosion resistance, good adhesion, etc. The resultant coating in addition to being durable to the elements produces a unique opalescent color effect on the substrate material.

A transparent topcoat coating composition is described comprising a thermoplastic or thermosetting resin material containing low pigment to binder ratio of iron oxide encapsulated mica particles. When used in a multicoat coating process as a transparent topcoat, an article is produced which not only produces improved 'metallic' color effects, but is stable to the elements as well.

Multilayer automotive paint system

A transparent topcoat coating compositions is described comprising a thermosetting resin material containing a pigment composition and a soluble dye. The pigment composition contains about 40 weight percent to about 80 weight percent of iron oxide encapsulated mica particles. The composition also contains 0.5 weight percent to about 82.5 weight percent of a soluble 1:2 chrome or 1:2 cobalt metal organic complex dye. When used in a multi-coat coating process as a base coat overcoated with a transparent topcoat, an article is produced having improved pearlescent color effects, improved depth and clarity, and resistance to fade from ultraviolet light.

Automotive paint compositions containing pearlescent pigments and dyes

A transparent topcoat coating composition is described comprising a thermoplastic or thermosetting resin material containing low pigment to binder ratio of titanium dioxide encapsulated mica particles. When used in a multicoat coating process as a transparent topcoat, an article is produced which not only produces satin finish color effects, but is stable to the elements as well.

A coating composition is described comprising a thermoplastic or thermosetting resin material containing a pigment composition. The pigment composition contains about 5 to about 90% iron oxide encapsulated mica particles. When used in a multi-coat coating process as a basecoat overcoated with a transparent overcoat, an article is produced which not only produces improved pearlescent color effects, but is stable to the elements as well.

Pearlescent automotive paint compositions

Polymer coatings having high solids content and containing mica pigments are applied with uniform appearance when the liquid layer which is deposited on an article is greater in thickness than the nominal maximum length of the mica platelets. Coatings which contain 0.01-5 weight percent mica having up to 60 micrometers maximum platelet length are produced in thicknesses of 0.045-0.076 mm. The coatings are best applied by a conventional turbobell rotary atomizer.

The composition when applied to a substrate imparts a super jet black coating which is non-bleeding, unaffected by the dispersion method or vehicle used, and is durable to the elements.

The composition when applied to a substrate imparts a super jet black coating which is non-bleeding, unaffected by the dispersion method or vehicle used, and is durable to the elements.
