The present invention relates to a light, biodegradable, organic pigment and filler, and a method of manufacturing it. According to the present invention, a solution comprising a starch derivative is first prepared by dissolving the starch derivative into a suitable solvent, and, after that, the solution is brought into contact with a non-solvent to precipitate the starch derivative from the solvent, and, as a result, a dispersion is obtained, one which comprises a precipitate consisting of starch derivative and a liquid phase formed of the solvent and the non-solvent, after which the solvent is removed from the liquid phase and the precipitate is separated from the non-solvent and recovered. The present invention can be used to manufacture both a product comprising 100-300 nm spherical particles, which is suitable for use as a pigment, and a coral-like, porous product which is particularly suitable as a filler.

Pigment and filler and a method of manufacturing it

A material which is suitable as filler or coating pigment for a fibrous web and a method for manufacturing thereof. According to the method, a feed comprising organic polymer material is cooled to at least approximately &#x2212;50&#xb0; C., after which it is refined in a jet refiner to a desired particle size. The present invention generates uniform pigment particles which comprise, for instance, starch esters, and which particles have a porous surface structure, in which case they are suitable for instance as coating pigments and fillers for offset and ink-jet papers.

Starch-based filler and coating pigment composition for fibre webs and method for the manufacture thereof

The invention relates to novel transglycosylation products and their preparation. The transglycosylation products according to the invention are prepared from starch derivatives, such as esters or ethers of starch. The products are obtained by reacting a starch derivative with an alcohol in the presence of an acid catalyst. The forming product is separated by precipitation or by removing any unreacted alcohol by evaporation. In the products according to the invention the good properties of starch derivatives, such as the excellent water resistance of esters, are combined with the versatility of transglycoside products. The products can be used as adhesives, in which case they are formulated, for example as hot-melt adhesives, and as comonomers, prepolymers or macroinitiators in the preparation of polymers.

Starch derivatives and a method for their preparation

A process for manufacturing transglycosylation products. According to the process, a starch derivative is reacted at acidic conditions with an alkanol containing 1-6 hydroxyl groups and the reaction product is recovered as such or it is subjected to further processing. According to the method, the transglycosylation reaction between the starch derivatives and the alkanol is carried out in a reactive extrusion process, whereby the reaction can essentially be performed in the absence of liquid media at high yield. The invention also relates to new transglycosylation products of starch derivative, containing anions derived from a phosphorus-containing acid, which are chemically bonded to the product.

A polymer dispersion or solution containing a hydrophobic polysaccharide, which is dispersed or dissolved in liquid phase, and plasticizer composition of the polysaccharide, whereby at least 10% by weight of the plasticizer composition is formed from alkenyl succinic anhydride. The invention also relates to the preparation of polymer dispersions and solutions and to the films and coatings produced from them. The dispersions according to the invention are stable, and coating with excellent film-forming properties can be prepared from them.

Polymer solution and dispersion and a process for the preparation thereof

The invention relates to an adhesive formulation that comprises a starch-based adhesive dissolved in water. According to the invention the adhesive is made up of a native starch transglycosylation product and the solids content of the adhesive formulation is at least 45% by weight. The invention also relates to a method for preparing such adhesive formulations and to the use of the adhesives.

The invention relates to a new process for preparing polymer dispersions. According to the invention, a mixture is first formed of a polymer component, a plasticizer, dispersion auxiliaries and water, the mixture is then heated to approximately 20 to 100&deg; C. in order to form a paste-like composition, and the paste-like composition is dispersed in water. The dispersion obtained according to the invention can be used for coating paper or board, as a primer, as a component in adhesives, paint or lacquer, and it is also suited for the manufacture of cast films and for use as a binder in materials based on cellulosic fibers.

Process for the preparation of polymer dispersions

The invention relates to a hydrophobic polymer dispersion and a solvent-free process for the preparation thereof. According to the invention, the dispersion contains starch ester together with dispersion admixtures known as such. According to the process, the polymer is first mixed with a plasticizer in order to obtain a plasticized polymer blend. The plasticized polymer blend is then mixed with dispersion admixtures and water at an elevated temperature so as to form a dispersion. The plasticizing of the polymer and the dispersion of the mixture in water can be performed in an extruder. The obtained dispersion is homogenized in order to improve its stability. The dispersion obtained by the invention can be used to coat paper or board, as a primer or a component in paint or labeling adhesives, and it is also suitable for the production of cast films and as a binder in materials based on cellulose fibers, as well as for coating medicinal preparations.

Hydrophobic polymer dispersion and process for the preparation thereof

The invention concerns a hydroxypropyl starch ester (HPS ester), compositions containing it, and a process for the preparation thereof. According to the invention, the molar substitution in the HPS ester is 2 at the most and the substitution degree in the ester group is at least 1. The HPS ester is prepared by hydroxypropylating a starch-containing base material in an aqueous alkanol medium. A starch component can be prepared of the HPS ester containing 90 to 60% by weight HPS ester and 10 to 40% by weight of a plasticizer. Compositions which are suited for, e.g., coating board or paper and for use as a component in labelling adhesives or paint, can be made from the starch component by combining it with auxiliaries known as such within the polymer and plastics technology.

The present invention is related to a novel type of composition with modifiable properties and suitable for controlled release of active ingredients in industrial use. The composition contains an active ingredient and starch acetate in the form of a compact. More specifically the invention relates to active ingredients such as solid dosage forms of drugs, especially compacts and tablets. In these compacts starch acetate with distinct substitution degrees are used. The starch acetate makes the process industrially feasible with good flowability and facilitates the formation of firm tablets. Starch acetate enables the controlled release of the active ingredient. The present invention is related to a composition for pH dependent or pH regulated controlled release of active ingredients especially drugs. The composition consists of a compactible mixture of the active ingredient and starch molecules substituted with acetate and dicarboxylate residues. The preferred dicarboxylate acid is succinate. The average substitution degree of the acetate residue is at least 1 and 0.2-1.2 for the dicarboxylate residue.
