Methods and apparatus, including computer program products, implementing and using techniques for recovering a database, distributed in two or more storage devices, based on a backup of each storage device. The backup of each storage device is acquired. In association with the backup for each storage device, a quiesce point indication is acquired. The quiesce point indication indicates backed up data of each storage device. The backed up data is based on a quiesce point. For each storage device, a recovery process is selected. For each storage device, in response to the selected recovery process being a collective copying process, recovering contents of each storage device is done by collective copying. In response to the selected recovery process being to recover based on the quiesce point indication, the contents of each storage device is recovered based on the indicated backed up data of the quiesce point indication.

Backing up and recovering a database

A method, system and computer program product for storing a sub-table by deciding one of a plurality of table storage areas, the sub-tables resulting from partitioning of a table in a database. To provide efficient table partitioning, a database is described for distributively locating a plurality of sub-tables resulting from partitioning of a table in a database. This includes an acquiring section that monitors access occurrences to each of the sub-tables to acquire a history of access occurrences. Also a deciding section decides a table storage area in which a sub-table is to be located, based on the history of access occurrences to each of the sub-tables.

Table partitioning and storage in a database

A system for managing a plurality of storage devices that are configured to store a database. The system includes an access instruction acquiring unit configured for acquiring an access instruction to access the database. The system also includes a predicting unit configured for predicting a table to be accessed in response to the acquired access instruction. The system further includes a relocation unit configured for mirroring the table predicted by the predicting unit, the mirroring between the plurality of storage devices.

Controlling mirroring of tables based on access prediction

To provide efficient table partitioning, a database is described for distributively locating a plurality of sub-tables resulting from partitioning of a table in a database. This includes an acquiring section that monitors access occurrences to each of the sub-tables to acquire a history of access occurrences. Also a deciding section decides a table storage area in which a sub-table is to be located, based on the history of access occurrences to each of the sub-tables.

A method of controlling access to a database includes autonomously archiving data within a database from a first storage device into a second storage device, according to an archive condition; the archive condition being input in conjunction with the data and being associated with the data; accepting an input of an access command to the database; determining whether data to be accessed in response to the access command input has already been archived in the second storage device based on the access command and the archive condition; and accessing data included in the database or data archived in the second storage device according to the access command based on the determination.

Technique of controlling access to database

An embodiment of the invention includes an information management server with a registration unit that registers a status change condition of a database and a notification action so that they are associated with each other. Also, the information management server includes a communication unit that receives an acquisition request for a status change notification via database connection established with respect to a client and a change detection unit that detects a status change satisfying the condition of the acquisition request and invokes the notification action associated therewith. According to aspect of the invention, a notification unit causes the communication unit to send a notification including a result of the notification action via the database connection as a response to the acquisition request, and returns control of the connection to the client.

Various embodiments of a method, system and computer program product backup and recover a database. A database is distributed in a plurality of storage devices. A target designation designating a target database is received. One or more storage devices of the plurality of storage devices, storing at least a portion of the target database, are selected. A quiesce point is established by completing an ongoing transaction for the target database and inhibiting a further transaction. In response to establishing the quiesce point, a backup is generated by collectively copying data on each storage device of the one or more selected storage devices. The backup associated with a quiesce point indication indicating backed up data of the said each storage device of the one or more selected storage devices in accordance with the quiesce point, are recorded.
