A system and method for prompting a patient experiencing ventilatory depression to breathe includes at least one sensor for detecting ventilatory depression by detecting inadequate breathing or lack of breathing in the patient. The system also includes one or more sensors for determining the type of breathing problem experienced by the patient. A sensor for detecting motion of the patient is used to determine whether the patient is moving. If inadequate or a lack of breathing is detected and the patient is not moving, the system provides verbal prompts or tactile stimuli to prompt the patient to breathe to improve patient ventilation.

System and method for detecting ventilatory depression and for prompting a patient to breathe

Devices, systems, and methods for measuring the blood loss of a subject during a medical procedure. Blood and other fluids are received within a container, and a blood measurement device determines the hemoglobin concentration of the fluid within the container. The blood measurement device can also calculate the estimated blood loss of the subject based upon the determined hemoglobin concentration and the volume of the fluid within the container and the patient's hemoglobin.

Devices, systems, and methods for measuring blood loss

A system for measuring the blood loss comprises a measuring device that determines the hemoglobin concentration of fluid within a container utilizing a light source and a light detector. The container receives blood and other fluids from a patient during a medical procedure. Light from the light source is passed through the blood and other fluids in the container and is detected by the light detector. Based upon a magnitude of light detected, the hemoglobin concentration of the fluid in the container can be determined. A volume-measuring device determines the volume of blood and fluid in the container. Knowing the hemoglobin concentration and volume of fluid in the container, the volume of patient blood loss in the container can be determined. The blood loss measuring device in combination with infusion systems maintains a real-blood volume status so that proper infusion of blood, crystalloid and/or colloid solutions occurs.

Apparatus and system for measuring volume of blood loss

A subject interface appliance () configured to deliver a breathable substance to a subject. The subject interface appliance includes a primary interface () configured to deliver a breathable substance to the subject, and a secondary interface () configured to obtain gas samples from the airway of the subject. The secondary interface is resiliently held at a default position with respect to the primary interface. The default position is located such that installation of the primary and secondary interfaces on the subject results in the application of a bias force to the secondary interface that holds the secondary interface in place.
