Systems and methods are disclosed including a method comprising: receiving, with a controller having a computer processor, a preservation status input from a user indicative of whether or not to preserve a virtual local area network (VLAN) tag in a header of a data packet transmitted within an Ethernet local area network (E-LAN), the VLAN tag identifying at least one of customer information and service provider information for the data packet in the E-LAN, wherein the E-LAN comprises network devices having physical ports and is configured to allow multiple customers use of an individual physical port; determining a scalable network-wide service configuration model having multiple predetermined rules for automatically configuring the physical ports of the network devices for the E-LAN based on the preservation status input from the user; and configuring automatically, with the controller, the physical ports of the network devices using the predetermined rules of the configuration model.

A method for multicasting data packets is provided. The method includes preparing multiple point to point connections between a root node and multiple destination nodes to establish point to multipoint connections. In addition, the method includes determining whether the received data packet is a multicast data packet and generating a plurality of the data packets by copying the received data packet if the received data packet is a multicast data packet. The at least one particular node may store resource statuses for each of the one or more nodes. Based on an analysis of resource statuses, the at least one particular node may determine an availability of an end-to-end path of reserved resources of a tunnel including one or more of the nodes based on an analysis of resource statuses.

In particular embodiments, a network element filters information sent to a neighboring network element. In the embodiments, the core network element may determine whether the neighboring network element is an edge network element or a core network element. If the neighboring network element is an edge network element, the core network element may set a filter, remove traffic engineering information according to the filter, and send the remaining information to the neighboring network element.

A method for rejecting a request to alter a connection includes establishing a first connection with a first node and a second connection with a second node. The second connection passes through the first node and has an associated first end-to-end state. The method also includes transmitting, for relay by the first node to the second node, a first request to alter the second connection with the second node so that the second connection will have an associated second end-to-end state. The method additionally includes receiving a rejection message from the first node indicating that the first request to alter the second connection failed. The method further includes transmitting a second request to alter the second connection with the second node to ensure that the second connection is again in the associated first end-to-end state.
