This disclosure describes techniques for determining an appropriate cost to charge a user for an item in an environment that relies on sensor data rather than traditional checkout methods. For instance, a physical store may include a weight sensor on a shelf to identify a customer picking an item from the shelf Upon the user picking the item, the techniques may determine a first cost of the item. When a camera is used to observe the user exiting the store, triggering automatic payment for the item, the techniques may determine whether the price of the item has changed. If so, then the techniques may charge the user for the lesser of the two prices.

Determining item cost using auto-generated sensor data

Described herein are systems and techniques for implementing a third-party item tracking and payment system that enables a user to walk out without a manual checkout process. The techniques include receiving user identifying information associated with a payment account and conveying an identifier of the account to a management system of the retailer. Items, as selected by the user, are added to a virtual cart that is checked out automatically when the user exits the store and the third party system communicates the cart contents to the retailer for cost calculation and then instructs payment using the stored payment information without disrupting existing inventory and account management systems.

Third-party retailer delegation for automated-checkout retail environments

A point-of-sale (POS) system may use biometric or other contactless techniques to determine tokenization data that attributes a transaction with a particular payment account for settlement. A first payment method specified by a user for use at the POS may be issued by a first bank that does not participate in tokenization. A second payment account associated with a different entity and issued by a second bank that does support tokenization is associated with the first payment method. The POS transaction completes, using a token associated with the second payment account. Another transaction then takes place in which the second bank charges the first bank for the amount of the completed transaction.

A time-sensitive scannable code unique to the user may be generated and presented by an electronic device such as a smartphone. The time-sensitive scannable code may be scanned at transaction terminal in the physical store. Using the scannable code, the system may securely determine that user profile information from the user's network-based activity may be provided to the transaction terminal for use in the physical location.

This disclosure describes techniques for determining when to transition a service-provider application between an in-store mode of operation and an online mode of operation using time as a proxy for location of a mobile device executing an application. When a user arrives at a physical location of the service provider, the user may provide an indication of this arrival via the application. In response, the application may transition from the online mode of operation to the in-store mode of operation. Further, the application may set a timer for a predefined amount of time and, after this amount of time elapses, may transition from the in-store operation mode back to the online operation mode.

Time-based check-in for mobile-device applications

Point-of-sale systems may include stations having interactive monitors mounted at specific heights and angles that permit such monitors to be viewed and interacted with by an associate or a customer. Some point-of-sale systems may include two stations, each having a monitor aligned in opposite directions, a user of one monitor may not view the other monitor, and vice versa. The point-of-sale systems may also include instrument readers (e.g., credit card readers or NFC readers) for recognizing payment instruments of customers and identifying the customers based on the payment instruments. Each of the monitors and instrument readers may be linked by cables to computer devices that are securely housed in a chamber above which the monitors are mounted. The monitors and other components are installed in a modular fashion, and may be independently installed or replaced without requiring an installation or replacement of the entire point-of-sale system.
