A system according to various embodiments includes: a cooling network within a turbine component, the cooling network including at least one passageway fluidly connected with a surface of the turbine component; a cooling fluid source for providing a cooling fluid to the cooling network; and a temperature-actuated flow modulating device fluidly connected with the cooling fluid source and the cooling network, the temperature-actuated flow modulating device configured to: detect an ambient air temperature proximate the turbine component; and control a flow of the cooling fluid to the cooling network based upon the detected ambient air temperature.

A fluid sensor cable assembly and method uses one or more conductive bodies extending along an elongated core body for conducting a heating current to heat the cable assembly. The present disclosure generally provides methods and apparatus for efficiently crosslinking silicon carbide fiber precursor polymers with electron beam radiation. The methods and apparatus utilize a platform containing silicon carbide fiber precursor polymer. The temperature of the platform is regulated while the silicon carbide fiber precursor polymer is irradiated to thereby regulate the temperature of the irradiated silicon carbide fiber precursor polymer thereon. In this way, the temperature of the irradiated silicon carbide fiber precursor polymer is regulated via the platform both during and after it is subjected to radiation. At least one of the platform and the e-beam radiation mechanism may be translated with respect to the other to irradiate different portions of the silicon carbide fiber precursor polymer and, ultimately, the entirety of the silicon carbide fiber precursor polymer contained on the platform.

The present disclosure generally relates to methods of using boron-containing additives for crosslinking polysilazane green fibers, which are precursors to silicon carbide fibers. A system is provided for monitoring strain in a substrate using a strain sensor element within a fiber optic sensing cable. Accurate and rapid measurement of strain of remote substrates presents major technical challenges and is the focus of much of the description presented. However, systems, methods and devices provided by the present invention are not only capable of reliably measuring strain in real time, but are also capable of measuring other characteristics of a substrate such as its temperature, pressure and its acoustic characteristics. The system is configured such that a strain sensor element within a strain sensing zone detects substantially the true strain characteristics of the substrate. And while other sensing elements within the same fiber optic sensing cable may not be configured to detect substrate strain at all, these sensing elements may reliably measure the temperature and pressure at the surface of the substrate adjacent to the strain sensing zone.

The present invention provides novel filled silicone compositions comprising a nano-particulate metal oxide filler selected from nano-particulate monoclinic alpha-phase bismuth oxide, nano-particulate erbium oxide, and mixtures thereof. The new composite compositions exhibit a combination of outstanding performance characteristics in both the cured and uncured states. Thus, the uncured formulations are typically free flowing liquids which are self-leveling, which de-gas readily under vacuum, are readily colorable through the addition of pigments, and which cure at temperatures of about 60&#xb0; C. The cured compositions possess outstanding acoustic characteristics which make them ideally suited for use in applications such as acoustic lenses for medical imaging and therapy. For example, the acoustic impedance of compositions provided by the present invention is closely matched to the acoustic impedance of human tissue. This may result in an enhancement of ultrasound transmission efficiency between the lens of an ultrasound probe comprising such a composition and the patient.
