A carbon nanotube-based thermal gasket for space vehicle applications, and process for making the same, is disclosed. A thermal gasket is created that includes one or more free-standing carbon nanotube (CNT) sheets formed of a CNT composition comprising randomly-oriented CNTs and a thermally-conductive resin material. The thermally-conductive resin material is encased within the one or more free-standing CNT sheets and prevented by the one or more CNT sheets from physical contact with an outer side of the thermal gasket.

Carbon nanotube based thermal gasket for space vehicles

A composition includes a carbon nanotube (CNT)-infused carbon fiber material that includes a carbon fiber material of spoolable dimensions and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) infused to the carbon fiber material. The infused CNTs are uniform in length and uniform in distribution. The CNT infused carbon fiber material also includes a barrier coating conformally disposed about the carbon fiber material, while the CNTs are substantially free of the barrier coating. A continuous CNT infusion process includes: (a) functionalizing a carbon fiber material; (b) disposing a barrier coating on the functionalized carbon fiber material (c) disposing a carbon nanotube (CNT)-forming catalyst on the functionalized carbon fiber material; and (d) synthesizing carbon nanotubes, thereby forming a carbon nanotube-infused carbon fiber material.

CNT-infused carbon fiber materials and process therefor

A composition includes a carbon nanotube (CNT)-infused metal fiber material which includes a metal fiber material of spoolable dimensions, a barrier coating conformally disposed about the metal fiber material, and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) infused to the metal fiber material. A continuous CNT infusion process includes: (a) disposing a barrier coating and a carbon nanotube (CNT)-forming catalyst on a surface of a metal fiber material of spoolable dimensions; and (b) synthesizing carbon nanotubes on the metal fiber material, thereby forming a carbon nanotube-infused metal fiber material.

CNT-infused metal fiber materials and process therefor

Ring-shaped shape memory alloys put disk-shaped ceramic materials in a state of compression. The rings are radially deformed to introduce plastic strain into the rings. The rings are sized to closely receive the disk-shaped ceramic strike plates. When the assembly is heated, the rings attempt to regain their original shape and thereby put the ceramic strike plates into uniform, two-dimensional compression.

System, method, and apparatus for improving the performance of ceramic armor materials with shape memory alloys

A carbon nanotube-infused fiber and a method for its production are disclosed. Nanotubes are synthesized directly on a parent fiber by first applying a catalyst to the fiber. The properties of the carbon nanotube-infused fiber will be a combination of those of the parent fiber as well as those of the infused carbon nanotubes.

CNT-infused fiber and method therefor

The present invention provides fabrics that have unique mechanical, chemical, electrical, and thermal properties. The fabrics comprise layers of woven, knit or felted fibers, yarns or tow. Interstitially synthesized nanotubes, such as single-walled or multi-walled carbon nanotubes, enhance the fabric's antiballistic properties. These nanotubes may also insulate, semi-conduct or super-conduct electrical charges, or provide enhanced thermal properties of these fabrics which can be layered to form unique garments or structures.

Ballistic fabrics with improved antiballistic properties

A ballistic armor uses shape memory alloys and novel joining techniques to form a solution from a combination of shape memory metallic alloys (SMA) and ceramic materials. The SMA allows a high amount of strain to be recovered through a low temperature heat treatment. The amount of strain recoverable is much higher than that available through conventional thermal expansion mismatch solutions. Solid state or low temperature bonding methods are used to join the dissimilar materials. This joining technique avoids introducing excessive heat that would cause the SMA to transform before the armor system is assembled.

System, method, and apparatus for forming ballistic armor from ceramic and shape memory metallic alloy materials

An open cell or highly porous woven composite truss utilizes fibers of carbon, glass, ceramic, or the like that are woven together in a loom. The warps or tow are woven with the wefts, while the fibers are impregnated with resin. The resin impregnation step may be performed before or after the weaving step. The truss is then cured on the loom and later may be machined as needed. A rigid foam material may be used to stabilize the shape of the truss prior to curing and while machining. The foam may be later chemically dissolved or otherwise disposed of.

A process for producing carbon nanotubes includes carbon plasma generation with microwave energy, plasma stabilization, and product deposition. Stabilization homogenizes the plasma energy density and concentration, leading to a more efficient reactor. A transition metal catalyst and associated catalyst support are used to form the end product. The formation region may have variations of geometry and supporting equipment that will affect the rate and purity of production. The formation region is immediately downstream from the plasma stabilization region such that the apparatus may be mounted on a robotic arm for direct deposition of product.

System and method of synthesizing carbon nanotubes

A process for producing single-walled carbon nanotubes in a continuous manner includes carbon plasma generation, plasma stabilization, and product deposition. The plasma is generated by electrical resistance heating or electron beam vaporization of feedstock. The plasma is stabilized with radio frequency energy from inductance coils and with electrical resistance heaters in the reactor. Stabilization homogenizes the plasma energy density and concentration, leading to a more efficient reactor. Finally, a transition metal catalyst and associated catalyst support are used to form the end product. The formation region may have variations of geometry and supporting equipment that will affect the rate and purity of the swcnt production. The formation region is immediately downstream from the plasma stabilization region. In addition, the entire apparatus is designed so that it can be mounted vertically such that continuous deposition of product can be applied with precision using an overhead robotic arm.

System, method, and apparatus for continuous synthesis of single-walled carbon nanotubes

An isotropic carbon alloy is formed from various carbon allotropes such as SWCNT, fullerenes, MWCNT, diamond-like carbon, diamond, nanocrystalline diamond, diamondoids, amorphous carbon, graphitic polyhedral crystals, graphite, graphene, HOPG, and hydrogenated amorphous carbon. The SWCNTs are present in different morphologies such as ropes, bundles, single filaments, tangled webs, etc. The SWCNT have large aspect ratios and weave throughout the alloy. Many morphologies of ICA are possible with a range of properties attainable as a function of the composition of carbon allotropes and post-processing techniques. Post-processing can be done to enhance particular properties of the ICA and may include HIP, furnace heating, ion beam irradiation, electron beam irradiation, laser irradiation, electric resistive heating, inductive heating, IR irradiation, etc. Contaminants may be present in the ICA as a consequence of the process equipment, process feedstock, or catalysts used in the reactors.

Pure carbon isotropic alloy of allotropic forms of carbon including single-walled carbon nanotubes and diamond-like carbon

A unidirectional tape comprising carbon fibers and a fugitive binder is provided, as well as methods for forming the tape and composite parts using the unidirectional tape in a resin-transfer molding (RTM) process. A fugitive binder adheres fibers of the tape. The tape is laid in an RTM mold, and the mold is sealed or vacuum bagged, then heated. Hot nitrogen gas is pumped through the mold cavity, heating the carbon fibers to completely pyrolyze the binder. No residue from the binder remains, as the nitrogen carries gaseous products from the pyrolysis out of the mold. The mold is cooled to a temperature suitable for resin injection, and resin is injected into the mold cavity, wetting the fibers of the tape and completely filling the cavities of the mold. The mold is heated to cause curing of the resin, then cooled and disassembled for removal of the completed composite component.

Carbon layup tape with fugitive binder and method of use

An apparatus and method for fabricating corrugated composite stiffeners provides a base tool having grooves formed in an outer surface and a roller having a rotating shaft and a removable, lobed, elastomeric member surrounding the shaft. The lobes of the elastomeric member form a radial array around the shaft and match the contours of the grooves in the base tool. A section of prepreg fabric is placed between the roller and the base tool, and the roller is rotated to sequentially engage the lobes with the grooves, the lobes pressing the fabric into the grooves, the fabric conforming to the contours of the grooves. Several layers of fabric are applied, then the elastomeric member is released from the shaft, laid out flat, and placed on the fabric on the base tool, the lobes locating in the grooves. The base tool, fabric, and elastomeric member are enclosed in a vacuum bag and heated to cure the fabric.
