An aqueous dispersion of a hydrophobically-modified alkali-soluble multistage polymer useful as a thickener affording high thickening efficiency and an aqueous coating composition comprising such aqueous dispersion showing good stability after heat aging without compromising stability upon addition of colorants.

A water-based coating composition containing two parts A and B: (A) a binder component containing a waterborne epoxy dispersion, dispersed inorganic particles, and a polymeric dispersant; and (B) a hardener component, and a ratio of the component (A) and the component (B) is 90:1 to 2:1. The polymeric dispersant contains anti-agglomerating functional groups that are unreactive with oxirane groups of the epoxy dispersion.

An aqueous polymer dispersion is composed of (i) an emulsion polymer having a weight average molecular weight of from 2,000 to 30,000 daltons, wherein the emulsion polymer comprises as polymerized units, based on the dry weight of the emulsion polymer, (a) from 10% to 90% by weight of an ethylenically unsaturated ionic monomer, (b) from 5% to 90% by weight of a photosensitive monomer, and (c) from 0 to 85% by weight of an ethylenically unsaturated nonionic monomer; and (ii) from 3.5% to 50% by weight of TEMPO and/or a derivative thereof, based on the total dry weight of the aqueous polymer dispersion. An aqueous coating composition comprising the aqueous polymer dispersion and a binder provides coatings with improved durability.

The present invention provides a binder composition comprising a first binder comprising by dry weight based on total dry weight of the first binder, from 5% to 98% of polymer particles, from 0.3% to 10% of a first polysaccharide, from 0.01% to 5% of a crosslinker, from 0.3% to 6% of a water-soluble metal cation, and from 0.05% to 3% of a cationic polyelectrolyte. The present invention relates to an aqueous copolymer dispersion comprising an emulsion copolymer and two hydrophobic aromatic ketones, wherein the aromatic ketones are, based on the dry weight of the copolymer, from 0.1 to 3 wt % benzophenone and from 0.1 to 4 wt % a benzophenone derivative; wherein the dispersion comprises 0 or less than 0.1 wt % hydrophilic aromatic ketone.
