A method for monitoring driver alertness in a vehicle is disclosed. Image data representing images of an eye of a driver are obtained, the images having been captured while the driver is operating the vehicle. An eye openness measure of the eye of the driver is computed, based on the image data. A determination is made that the driver is in an unsafe state for driving based on the eye openness measure, and an alert is generated, while the driver is operating the vehicle, based on determining that the driver is in the unsafe state.

Driver alertness monitoring system

Disclosed is a technique for managing access by a portable device to an in-vehicle router system (IVRS). The IVRS determines network access privilege of the portable device located within the vehicle. The portable device determines whether it is connected to a wireless access point (AP) of the IVRS or a rogue network. The portable device transmits a first token to the wireless AP, via a first communication link implementing a first protocol stack, to prompt the wireless AP to reply with a second token. The portable device receives the second token via a second communication link implementing a second protocol stack different than the first protocol stack between the portable device and the IVRS. The portable device determines whether the second token matches the first token. If the second token is determined to match the first token, the portable device authenticates the wireless AP.

Method for controlling access to an in-vehicle wireless network

Disclosed is a technique for managing communications of portable devices within a vehicle through an in-vehicle router system. The in-vehicle router system includes a plurality of out-of-band interfaces used to determine a user type associated with a portable device used to manage a connection with a wireless access point. The out-of-band interface receives a query from a portable device via a first communication link. The query includes identifying information of the portable device and a request for network credentials to a second communication link with a wireless access point. A user type is determined based on a location of the out-of-band interface and a unique identifier. Network credentials associated with the determined user type are retrieved. The network credentials are provided to the portable device via the first communication link. Access to the second communication link is restricted based on the user type and/or vehicle status information.

Limiting distraction from in-vehicle portable devices

Disclosed is a technique for managing communications of portable devices within a vehicle through an in-vehicle router system. The out-of-band interface receives a query from a portable device via a first communication link. The query includes identifying information of the portable device and a request for network credentials to a second communication link with a wireless access point. A user type is determined based on a location of the out-of-band interface and a unique identifier. Network credentials associated with the determined user type are retrieved. The network credentials are provided to the portable device via the first communication link. Access to the second communication link is restricted based on the user type and/or vehicle status information.
