The present invention provides a method for use in a wireless communication system that supports orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) of transmissions over a plurality of subcarriers. One embodiment of the method includes a network entity that allocates one or more of a plurality of sub-bands for communication with an access terminal. Each of the sub-bands includes one or more of the subcarriers and is associated with a corresponding a pseudo-random sequences. The network entity can also transmit one or more of the plurality of pseudo-random sequences over an air interface. The transmitted pseudo-random sequence indicate the sub-bands that are allocated for communication with the access terminal.

Method for synchronization and signaling of occupied bands in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmissions

The present invention provides a method of forming clusters of cells in a wireless communication system. The method includes accessing information generated by measuring channel conditions for at least one mobile unit and a plurality of cells in the wireless communication system. The method also includes adding more than one of the plurality of cells to at least one cell cluster based on the accessed information and coordinating communication between the cells in each cell cluster and the mobile unit(s).

The present invention provides a method of channel estimation implemented in a receiver having multiple antennas configured to receive at least one common pilot available to a plurality of users and a plurality of dedicated pilots. Each dedicated pilot is allocated to one of the plurality of users. The method includes estimating at least one first channel associated with a first user and at least one second channel associated with a second user based on observations of the plurality of dedicated pilots and of said at least one common pilot.

A wireless communication system and joint beamforming method across multiple base stations for communicating with mobile stations. The wireless communication system communication system includes base stations and mobile stations. At least one of the base stations includes a joint beamformer controlling beamforming for the base stations. Each of the mobile stations receive information from the base stations, maintain a multiple-input and multiple-output active set (MAS) of base stations, and provide precoder weights to each of the base stations included in the MAS. The joint beamformer calculates joint beamforming weights for controlling communications between the base stations and mobile stations.

Improvements are provided in an OFDM network that uses superposition coding. A broadcast signal and e.g. a unicast signal are each subjected to OFDM modulation including processing by an IDFT, combined, and transmitted using non-orthogonal transmission resources. In one approach, the respective signals are combined after instead of before the IDFT processing. In specific examples, a respective cyclic prefix is appended to each signal after the IDFT processing but before the respective signals are combined. In another approach, a broadcast pilot signal and e.g. a unicast pilot signal are transmitted concurrently with the broadcast and unicast information signals. The pilot signals are transmitted using the same time and subcarrier resources, but are made more distinguishable by combining each with a respective scrambling or spreading code. In specific examples, embodiments, the unicast pilot signal is used for estimating the data rate for transmission of further unicast information signals.

Method of OFDM communication using superposition coding

The present invention provides a method for suppressing interference using beamforming of uplink signals received at multiple base stations. The method may include accessing information indicative of a plurality of signals received over a plurality of uplink channels between a plurality of mobile units and a plurality of base stations. The method may also include forming a plurality of weighted signals by applying a plurality of beamforming weights to the plurality of signals. The plurality of beamforming weights are determined based on estimates of the channels from the plurality of users to the plurality of base stations and estimated interference between the signals. The method may further include combining subsets of the plurality of weighted signals associated with each of the plurality of mobile units.
