The present invention relates generally to an expression regulatory element operable in plants which includes oil palm, and in particular to an expression regulatory element operable selectively in the endosperm tissue of the plants. Said expression regulatory element comprises a sequence of nucleotides which specifically modulates the expression of a second nucleic acid molecule operably coupled to said expression regulatory element.

Expression regulatory elements

The present invention discloses a promoter sequence of light-harvesting chlorophyll a/b binding protein pGWLS01 isolated from the oil palm leaf. This promoter enables the manipulation of oil palm leaves for the production of high value-added products via genetic engineering tools. The novel features of the promoter itself which regulate high and specific expression of foreign genes in the leaves will avoid the interference of novel products in the commodity oil extracted from mesocarp and kernel tissues. Furthermore, the promoter is also potentially useful in the production of insect-resistant palm.

Leaf-specific chlorophyll a/b binding protein gene promoter from oil palm

The invention relates to regulatory sequences that regulate gene expression in the mesocarp and/or senescent leaves of certain plants. In certain embodiments, the invention is directed to abundant and selective expression of type 3 metallothionein-like genes in the mesocarp of a variety of plants including members of the Palme family. The invention also relates to methods of generating transgenic plants and plant tissues that comprise a nucleic acid of the invention. The invention further provides products derived from transgenic plants, plant materials or plant cells of the invention. Particular applications in oil palms are discussed. The invention further relates to nucleic acid constructs of the invention in cells of organisms other than plants.

Regulatory sequences for regulation of gene expression in plants and other organisms, and compositions, products and methods related thereto

The present invention relates to an isolated nucleic acid molecule comprising a sequence of nucleotides encoding a &#x3b2;-ketoacyl ACP synthase II from a plant, or a variant, derivative, homolog or analog of said &#x3b2;-ketoacyl ACP synthase II. The invention also relates to an isolated &#x3b2;-ketoacyl ACP synthase II enzyme from a plant. The polynucleotide sequences of the present invention may be used inter alia for the generation of cells or plants comprising such cells which have a modified phenotype and/or which exhibit a desired characteristic.
